Hazelwood Honors City Businesses; City Gets NW Community Award

BY CAROL ARNETT

The Hazelwood City Council recognized several businesses in the city who won awards from the Northwest Chamber of Commerce.

The Northwest Chamber of Commerce covers a wide area of northwest St. Louis County, from Hazelwood on the north, to Overland and Vinita Park on the south. Earth City is on the western end of the area, and Sycamore Hills is on the eastern end.

The Chamber honored Home Pure Air of Hazelwood as the Small Business of the Year. The large Business of the Year was Spirit Toyota. The Businessperson of the Year is Jerry Hart, with Valley Industries.

The Community Development Award went to the City of Hazelwood. Police Chief Carl Wolf and Councilman Bob Aubuchon were named to the 2009 Board of Directors.

In other action, the city held a public hearing on a request by Concentra Urgent Care, at 433 Lynn Haven Lane, for a variance of the 30 foot setback requirement for a pole sign. The facility would like to put a sign up at the front of their property. A representative from Concentra stated that the setback would make putting the new sign in difficult, and a smaller setback would increase the sign’s visibility. He noted the need for the sign, noting that Concentra is in the back of the building, and patients have said that they drove past the facility without realizing it.

The council put the item on the agenda for a first reading.
