‘Spags’ Was The Best Choice For the Rams; Way To Go Kurt!

BY RANDY GARDNER

The weekend rolled in and rolled out with a plethora of football news as the Cardinals will be playing the Steelers in the Super Bowl and the Rams end up with a new head coach, Steve Spagnuolo from the New York Giants.

Most casual fans won’t know him but if you follow football, he helped guide the Giants defense to the Super Bowl and a major upset of the undefeated New England Patriots.. He is very well respected in the football circles and so far most people would say he is a good hire.

Most of the time, a new coach will get a pass for a year or two to turn things around but not this time. The St. Louis fans want and expect a winning season next year. He signed a 4- year deal that has an escape clause if the team leaves. What is that all about?

That doesn’t sound too good, but he has to go at least 8-8 or 10-6 to be happy. We will see, only time will tell.

Look at the Cardinals of Arizona, formerly of St. Louis and Chicago. Who would have ever thought that we would even be talking about this right now that the Arizona Cardinals are heading to the Super Bowl. If you would have said this at the beginning of the season, most people would have laughed at you including the odds makers in Vegas.

Right now though, there are 50 plus guys and a lot of coaches and fans who think and believe they can win it all. Actually, you know how much of a believer in fate that I am and that I always feel that the do-gooder will win in life well.

Kurt Warner Said it Best

Here’s the perfect example of that. Kurt Warner said in his post game press conference, nobody believed in him anymore, but boy did he show them. The only thing that worries me now is that the Cardinals (can’t call them Big Red anymore) will get caught up in all of the two week hype leading up to the big game.

As you look around that team, not many players have been on a Championship team, so the lack of that could really hurt them. I was really impressed with the poise the team and coaches showed down the stretch in this one as Philadelphia gave them a run at the end.

I have always been a huge Anquoin Boldin fan but I lost a bit of respect for him this past weekend as he stepped up and got in the face of a coach. Let’s remember the roles here, you’re the player and he’s the coach. He is doing what is best for the team.

I don’t know all of the specifics about the incident but I hate to see things like this go on. Remember, it goes back to the player trying to be bigger than the game. If I was betting right now, I would go with the Cardinals but the lapse of two weeks before they play, I fear that they will lose their momentum streak they are on. Also you have to account for the Steelers defense. It will be fun to watch though.

We had a chance to attend and tape the Baseball Writers Dinner Monday at the wrap up to the Cardinals Winter Warm up and man was it impressive. You will get a chance to see it on TV on Channel 20 over the next few weeks. It is really cool to see the spectacle that is put on and to see players in a different light than on the field. If you ever get a chance to go to one of these, go, you won’t be sorry,
