Argentina Routs U.S 4-0

Prediction For U.S. Win

Falls Way Short Again

**Randy Gardner photo**It’s been like Christmas in June for me and many others as the United States Men’s National Soccer team is or should I say embarked on a historic run in the Copa America tournament. After a horrible start against Columbia, they bounced back with some big wins and a bit of help from some other countries and are in the semi finals. I write my columns on Tuesday and that is the day that the big game versus Argentina , so I have to write about it in past tense.

I am going to say that the United States will win 2-1 in a nail biter. I think they will double team Lionel Messi right out of the game. Messi is not only on paper but in real life game situations, the best player in the world.

A lot of people will say Ronaldo but he is just a fancy finisher, Messi is a workhorse, playmaker and goal scorer. So if the United States lost on Tuesday , it was certainly because of him and my predictions fell short.

There are many people that I talk too that say that the United States men’s team will never be talked about in the same manner as Argentina, Portugal or Germany. Just remember for all you nay sayers, that one or two big wins will change that mindset.

(Editor’s Note: Randy is always optimistic about the U.S. Team and some day he’s going to write about them winning it all in international competition.)

Can Cards Eliminate Inconsistency?

Onto the St. Louis Cardinals. They have been so up and down lately and I think that inconsistency will hurt this team down the stretch. In games heading to the 8th and 9th inning, I just don’t feel confident like years in the past.

Just like Monday night against the Cubs, they almost gave that away except for an exceptional play by Yadi Molina in the 9th throwing out a runner at third

The one strong point in this season is their pinch hitting, What a season for that. If they could combine the pinch hitting with some good defense, pitching and all around hitting, they will be fine.

I really don’t think anyone is going to catch the Cubs this year. I never thought I would say that but it is true. Anything can happen in baseball though, just like my advice in life, just keep chipping away at it. It may come slowly but don’t give up. Anything can happen at anytime, especially with the Wild Card in place…You get hot and you can win it all. Think Cardinals in 2011.

There is nothing better than watching baseball on a summer night with the windows open and the fans on blowing cool breeze in your face. Win or lose, does it really matter?

Finally, if you get a chance to go fishing, please do. I am not the greatest fisherman nor did I ever really even like it but over the past few months, I have taken a few days to take my boys fishing. It is a state of mind. If you relax and enjoy the experience it will be fun. I never thought I would say that but I am. For Fathers Day, I actually got a fishing rod and a tackle box. Who would have ever thought. I did wear my US Soccer hat though. There is nothing like the excitement of those 30 seconds of reeling in a fish and then finding out it is about the size of your hand. Remember it is about the experience, that’s what I am realizing life to be.
