The new kitchen in the Silver Dollar City Culinary & Craft School is so state-of-the-art and tastefully decorated that even Paula Dean might be envious. It’s a fabulous place for Branson visitors to learn to cook a traditional stew or soup, or bake a pie or cookies.
The Old Time Christmas 2008 holiday season at Silver Dollar City is marking the premier of this new attraction that was a warm and welcoming sight to us on a cold and blustery day in November when we finally reached our destination overlooking Echo Hollow.
As you enter the 3,000 square-foot farmhouse through gorgeous carved doors, you are greeted by friendly people and a roaring fire in a big stone fireplace. This is the showcase room or the waiting area, where you can relax a bit while waiting for your cooking or craft class to begin. The message, “Let us break bread together,” is carved into mantle.
In the next room is the kitchen-to-die-for with lighted cupboards, Viking appliances, chandeliers, wood-beam ceilings, and a woven copper backsplash that would make anyone want to stay in the kitchen and learn to cook. It also has flat-screen TVs and tiered seating so that everyone attending a class can see the chef’s every move.
For our visit, Chef Sam Hedrick whipped up some monster cookies and warm wassail. He also had a Harvest Pie baking in the oven and soup simmering on the stove. The aromas were magnificent. Classes cost $10 in addition to the regular Silver Dollar City admission fee and can be scheduled online or by calling in advance.
Two or three classes will be taught each day by Silver Dollar City’s own culinary experts, as well as guest chefs. The recipes will be different every day and their goal will be to teach and share what the Ozark area is all about.
