Top Seeded Hazelwood Central

Hosts Class 5, Dist. 5 Basketball

Hazelwood Central Basketball, Boys and Girls, will be hosting Class Five, District Five as top seeds and the tournament begins Saturday, Feb. 27.

Hazelwood Central Boys, Suburban XII (12) Conference, North Division Champions (5-0) opens Feb. 29 with a 5 p.m. game against the winner of Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest between Parkway North and Hazelwood West. Hazelwood Central was 21-4 prior to playing at Kirkwood Feb. 23 and was Class Five Quarterfinalists last year. Also on Feb. 29 DeSmet Jesuit plays a 6:30 contest against Pattonville and the Feb. 29 winners play for the Class Five, Distict Five title March 3 at 6:30.

The Girls Class Five, Distrtict Five tournament, which begins March 1, assures the Suburban XII of a district champion. Suburban XII North rivals Hazelwood Central meet at 5 p.m. while Suburban XII South Division rivals Parkway North and Pattonville play at 6:30 and the March 1 winners play for the Class Five, District Five title March 3 at 5 p.m. Hazelwood Central was 19-5 overall prior to playing Feb. 23 at Kirkwood.

   CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT SIX — St. Joseph’s Academy will be hosting the tourament but the first round games will be played Saturday at Ritenour High’s Costillow Fieldhouse as the Huskies play the Hazelwood East girls at 10 a.m. and the McCluer North boys at 12 noon. St. Joe opens the Girls Semifinals Feb. 29 with a 5 p.m. game against Hazelwood East or Ritenour followed at 7 p.m. with Suburban XII North Champion McCluer North against Ladue Horton Watkins. In boys action March 3 Chaminade, Metro Catholic Conference champions and third in State last year, heads to St. Joe for a 5 p.m. game against McCluer North or Ritenour while Hazelwood East and Ladue Horton Watkins follows at 7 p.m.

The Feb. 29 girls winners play their district title game March 4 at 6 p.m.while the March 4 boys winners play their district final March 5 at 2 p.m.

   CLASS FIVE STATE — Winners from Districts Five and Six meet in the Sectional round March 9 in St. Charles at Lindenwood University’s Robert Hyland Arena and the Sectional winners return to Lindenwood March 12 for the Quarterfinals Games both days are 6 p.m. for boys and 7:45 for girls. The State Semifinals-March 17, Third Place-March 18 and Championships-will be played March 19 in Columbia at Mizzou Arena, University of Missouri.

   CLASS FOUR, DISTRICT SIX — Incarnate Word Academy begins their quest for a four peat in state titles 5 p.m. Feb. 29 at Normandy High’s Viking Hall against the winner of Saturday’s 12:30 game between Soldan International Studies and Sumner. Also Saturday Suburban Central American Champion McCluer South-Berkeley plays Normandy at 3:30 while Jennings and Riverview Gardens meet at 6:30 and those two winners play March 1 at 5 p.m. District Semifinal winners play March 4 at 5 p.m. and the District Six champion plays the District Five winner March 8.

IWA was 4-0 in the Metro Women’s Athletic Associaton, 21-4 overall and on a 16-game winning streak prior to playing Feb. 24 at MWAA rival Ursuline Academy.

In Boys Basketball Saturday McCluer South Berkeley plays Normandy at 2 p.m. while Soldan plays Sumner at 5 p.m. Riverview Gardens plays Soldan or Sumner Feb. 29 while Suburban Central American Champion Jennings plays McCluer South Berkeley or Normandy March 1 and those semifinal games as well as the March 4 final will be played at 6:30. Winners from Districts Six and Five play 8 p.m. March 8 CLASS FOUR, DISTRICT SEVEN — At St. Dominic, O’Fallon McCluer plays the Feb. 29 opener 3:30 against Fort Zumwalt East in the girls game while the boys close the day with an 8 p,m. game against Lake St. Louis-based Liberty at 8 p.m. and the winners play at 5:30 against St. Charles (Girls March 1, Boys March 3). St. Dominic Girls play March 1, 7 p.m. against St. Charles West or Liberty (played Feb. 29, 5 p.m.) while the St. Charles West boys play March 3, 7 p.m. against Fort Zumwalt East or St. Dominic (played Feb. 29, 6:30). The District finals are March 4 (Girls 6 p.m., Boys 8 p.m.) and the District Seven winners play the District Eight Champions March 8 at Francis Howell Central (Girls 6 p.m., Boys 7:45).
