FEMA Program Available in Hazelwood

Hazelwood Emergency Management Director, Jim Matthies said Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announcement that the president had signed a disaster declaration for St. Louis and other St. Louis City will allow funding enabling individual homeowners and small businesses to receive assistance in recovering from the September flooding.

Matthies said a separate announcement by FEMA also outlined the limited assistance available for sewer back-up caused by the storms. The first step in receiving assistance is to apply to FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or online at www.FEMA.gov. Individuals with special or hearing impairments may call TTY 1-800-467-7585.

Matthies noted that there has not been a declaration approved to assist cities in recovering funds expended in helping their residents. The City of Hazelwod estimated it spent over $100,000 in recovery operations. Matthies said his team estimates the overall loss to residents, businesses, and the Hazelwood was approximately $3.2 million.
