Next Muny Show Opens Monday, July 12

Buddy Holly’ at Muny

Next Week July 12- 19

I’ve been waiting for the   Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story’ musical to be play in St. Louis for some time. When I read that the new musical was on the Muny scheduled I was thrilled and then curious to see how they when handle the Texas singer, his outstanding rock-a-billy band and their music. Then I wondering how the show would handle his tragic death along with two other stars and the “day the music died.”                                                           -Bob Lindsey            ••••

The jukebox musical, based on the life and career of early rock and roller Buddy Holly, opened in 1989 and the musical initially ran in London’s West End for over 12 years. It premiered on Broadway in 1990. This show features the songs of Buddy Holly and other early rockers, including classics like “That’ll Be The Day,” Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?”

Holly and his childhood high-school friends, The Crickets, turned country music upside-down and created a unique sound some called “the devil’s music.” The musical shows his rise and determination as a songwriter, composer and recording artist, ending with the ill-fated Winter Dance Party Tour of 1959. Buddy’s final performance of rocking, familiar tunes, with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, is recreated on stage in an electrifying jukebox party.

After 25 years from the Broadway debut, The Buddy Holly Story makes it to St. Louis, Thank your Muny leaders for brining this wonderful musical to our city.
