Alpha Players’ second show of its 56th season – E.P. Dowdall’s Parfumerie –will play the Florissant Civic Center in March.
Take a dash of dreams, a pinch of deceit, a cup of old fashioned romance and a dollop of laughter. Stir it together and pack it into a small perfume shop in 1937 and you have this new 2009 adaptation of Miklos Laszlo’s Parfumerie.
Parfumerie is a heart-warming romantic comedy that follows the tangled tale of George Horvath, a long-time employee of Hammerschmidt’s Parfumerie. Days before Christmas, Mr. Hammerschmidt fires George after mistakenly suspecting George of having an affair with his wife. To make matters worse, George’s only hope for a happy life away from the shop goes awry when he discovers that the stranger he has fallen in love with through a secret correspondence, is none other than Amalia Balash, a co-worker with whom he constantly fights. For the employees of the Parfumerie, wisdom, honesty and compassion for one another can’t help but lead to a happy ending.
The basic plot may sound a little familiar. The original Miklos Laszlo play was the inspiration for several well-known movies (The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail). This 2009 adaptation is fresh and new. E.P. Dowdall – the nephew of Miklos Laszlo – has updated the plot and jokes while maintaining the depth of the characters.
Parfumerie will be presented on March 20, 21, 27, and 28 at 8 p. m. and on Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m. at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre. Ticket prices are $18(adults) and $16 (students and seniors). A rate of $12 per ticket is available for groups of 10 or more for the same performance.
