More than 750 members of the community spent a recent sunny Saturday talking to university representatives about summer engineering programs, getting their hands sticky in slime, and learning how a 3D printer works, among other things.
These were just a few of the activities and opportunities available at the Hazelwood School District’s STEM Extravaganza. The STEM Extravaganza was held January 24 at Hazelwood Central High School and showcased a variety of educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
“The STEM Extravaganza provided an opportunity for students and parents to learn more about the STEM disciplines offered by the District and how these opportunities position our students for advanced study and even careers in these fields,” said Dr. Grayling Tobias, HSD superintendent. “As a school district we are always striving to increase student achievement and strengthen the relationships with our HSD families and the community. The STEM Extravaganza provided a platform for our staff to reach out to HSD families, organizations, businesses and other stakeholders to ensure our community continues to move forward. On behalf of the District and our students, we are grateful for the support of all who participated.”
At the STEM Extravaganza, there were demonstrations and hands-on activities for all grade levels, in addition to exhibits, speakers, college representatives and more. Exhibitors included: Pfizer, Ameren Missouri, Washington University in St. Louis, BJC Healthcare, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, Harris-Stowe State University, Danforth Plant Science Center, St. Louis Community College, FIRST Robotics, Project Lead the Way, HSD Math and Science, Boeing, Webster University, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The STEM Extravaganza exemplifies the District’s value of forming partnerships with parents and community members to promote academic achievement for all students.
