The City of Hazelwood’s ad-hoc volunteer Green Committee has been busy promoting the importance of recycling and keeping the community beautiful with its litter pick-up events. One of its members even won a sturdy park bench, made of recycled #2 plastic milk jugs, through a Missouri Recycling Association auction and donated it on behalf of the committee to Truman Park. It blends in with other park structures near the pond, giving residents a place to rest and enjoy the scenic view.

In 2014, the Hazelwood Green Committee adopted the Lynn Haven/Taylor/North Lindbergh intersection for regular litter pick-ups. “We feel this section of Hazelwood is one of the main entry points into our community, and we want this area to look clean and beautiful in order to give visitors a good impression of our city,” said Ron Darling, chairman of the Hazelwood Green Committee. “We pick up trash that is often wind blown from surrounding properties or thrown from vehicles, and then we separate the items which are recyclable.”

Last year, Hazelwood Green Committee members volunteered one hour for litter pick-up events, held on Saturday mornings every six weeks. They rotated their schedule between the Taylor and Lynn Haven sides of the intersection. Through their efforts, approximately 400 pounds of trash have been removed. About 100 pounds of it consisted of recyclable materials. Some of the trash items included plastic film/bags, Mylar bags, fast food waste items, polystyrene (foam), shingles, wood, and vehicle parts (i.e. hub caps, plastic bumper parts, gas caps, etc.)

“The litter pick-up events give our Green Committee members a sense of accomplishment knowing they’re doing their part to make Hazelwood a cleaner and more beautiful place to live. They feel like they’re making a difference to improve our environment by diverting recyclable items away from our landfills,” Darling noted.

Anyone with ideas on how to help Hazelwood become a more environmental-friendly community are invited to attend meetings of the Hazelwood Green Committee, which are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Hazelwood Community Center, 1186 Teson Road in White Birch Park. Starting time is 5 p.m. The next meeting date is Jan. 27.
