Combs , Parker Road’s Alex Ward Champions of FFSD’s Scholar Bowl

Combs Elementary School and 6th grade student Alex Ward of Parker Road Elementary School have been awarded top honors in the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s 15th annual Scholar Bowl.

All 17 elementary schools in the District participated in the Scholar Bowl competition, which was held at McCluer North High School.

The annual Scholar Bowl competition is sponsored by the District’s PROBE Gifted Education program. Each participating school selects six students to represent their school, who participate in a series of academic challenges including logical and creative thinking puzzles, Mancala (a logic game that develops critical thinking skills) and general knowledge questions.

The top four teams in total point accumulation receive trophies. In addition, high-scoring individual students face off in a special competition of general knowledge questions, with the student earning the most points named District Individual Champion.

Combs Elementary School won first place in the school competition. Its team members, who included 5th grader Alex McDowell and 6th-graders Emily Collins, Amanda Kolbe, Alex Moore and Trillium Swetnam, each took home first-place trophies. Fourth-grade teacher Greg Waller is coach of the Combs Elementary School team.

Alex Ward, a 6th-grade student at Parker Road Elementary School, finished first among the eight individual high achievers who competed for the District Individual Champion and was awarded the District Individual Champion title.
