It’s debatable whether it was the weather or the 2014 Valley of Flowers Queen Candidates that were the most gorgeous Sunday. After a cold and rainy crowning last year, all factors came together this year to create a memorable  day for everyone involved.

2013 Queen Kelly  Mahaffy graciously handed off her title to this year’s winner, Alex Phifer, of McCluer North High School. Alex took the crown in a stunning strapless royal blue dress and couldn’t contain her excitement as she gave her speech. “I’m most excited about getting to go out in Florissant and meet new people and to get to know the girls on Court better,” said Phifer.

The crowning took place just after sisters Elly and Libby Freesmeier switched places. Though Elly was sad to see her title of 1st runner-up go, it was made easier by giving it to her sister. “I’m excited for Libby. And I will definitely give her feedback on things to make the most of the upcoming year,” said Elly.

The Queen and Court must all be juniors in high school and not have been previous court candidates. They are sponsored by local businesses and organizations and are then interviewed by a panel of impartial judges.

The judges pick the Queen and four girls to act as her Court. The Valley of Flowers Festival serves as the beginning of a year-long commitment to serve in parades and other events representing the City.

On  Monday, the court, the girls parents, sponsors and local businesspersons honored them at a dinner, hosted by Commerce Bank, and held at Yacovelli’s.
