Greenway Chase Drive Bridge to Be Replaced Soon

The City of Florissant will receive federal reimbursement money for the Greenway Chase Drive bridge replacement, and it can’t come too soon.

Mayor Robert Lowery Sr. announced the funding on Tuesday after working with Gov. Matt Blunt and the East-West Gateway Council on Governments on the project.

The city had annexed this area where the bridge is located and City Engineer Scott Smith said the bridge needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

“Due to the geometric of the existing bridge coupled with increased capacity on both sides of Greenway Chase Drive, accidents were increasing at an alarming rate each year,” said Smith.

St. Louis County had widened Greenway Chase Drive on the west side of the bridge before this area was annexed by Florissant in 2005. A proposed development at that time never came through leaving a five-lane street funneling down into a tight two-lane bend on the bridge.

Smith said the approved $1.5 million grant application calls for extending the five-lane road from the west side of the bridge, through the bridge itself. It will continue on to New Halls Ferry in a later phase.

Mayor Lowery said the city’s public works department will be responsible for assuring the quality of this project through design and construction.

The mayor said the upcoming fiscal year in Florissant will contain many infrastructure improvement projects.

“It will be a huge lift to the city that 80 percent of the total design and construction costs of the Greenway Chase Drive Bridge and also the second phase of the Lindbergh Boulevard enhancement project will be reimbursable.”

The mayor emphasized that Florissant has an ongoing partnership with East-West Gateway Council and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
