The 9th Annual Delmar Loop Ice Carnival will begin its weekend of festivities with a Snow Ball on Friday., Jan. 17 at the Moonrise Hotel and will conclude with several events late Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18.
Attire for the Snow Ball is creative, icy white attire. Admission of $30 per person includes two drink tickets and hors d’ouevres. For $199 per couple, a superior king room and breakfast for two at the Moonrise Hotel will be added. The evening will also include live music, the crowning of the king and queen, and other surprises.
Dozens of events will take place simultaneously between the 6100 and 6600 blocks of Delmar. Admission is free.
All day long on Saturday, there will be ice slides for children next to Blueberry Hill. There will also be live ice carving demos by Ice Visions outside of Fitz’s. Beginning at 11 a.m., there will be a giveaway of 9,000 chocolate coins and $1,000 in real coins frozen in ice cubes.
From noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday near the Pin-Up Bowl and Pageant, 16 teams of human dog sleds will compete for prizes and bragging rights. At 3 p.m., Red Bull’s Air Force Dive Team will land on Delmar in front of the Moonrise Hotel. This is a photo op, so bring your camera.
Additional family fun will include Penquin Theatre by Tesseract Theatre Company near the Regional Arts Commission from noon to 4 p.m. A 5K and 10K Frozen Buns Run will begin at 10 a.m. at Blueberry Hill (frozenbunsrun.blogspot.com ). And a Temporary Tattoo Scavenger Hunt will give participants an opportunity to collect 12 temporary tattoos from Loop business and collect a prize at the Pageant.
The adults-only event will be the Putt Putt Pub Crawl beginning at noon at either Cicero’s or the Pageant and ending at 5 p.m.
Bring your camera and pose with ice penguins walking along the street; test your strength against the ice breaker with a sledgehammer; see synchronized hoop performances, stilt walkers, jugglers, and fire performers. Experience a s’mores roast, pick from one of ten clubs with live bands in the evening, view 50 ice sculptures up and down the sidewalks all day. Dozens of specialty shops and restaurants will offer price specials during the Ice Carnival.
