Hazelwood Parks Division Offers New NFL Flag Football Program
NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition at Harvestfest
The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is launching a new NFL Flag Football Program for kids between the ages of 7 and 15. Parents interested in signing up their children for this youth recreation program are invited to attend a pre-season information meeting on Monday, August 26, at White Birch Bay Aquatic Center, 1186 Teson Road, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Registration is open to residents and non-residents. The fees are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. This cost covers the issuance of an official NFL Flag uniform to each participant. The deadline date for registration is Sept. 23.
The season will last seven weeks from Sept. 28 to Nov. 9. Each team will play at least five regular season games, with the play-offs held on the final Saturday. All games will be played on Saturdays at Aubuchon Park, 1 Sunset Drive (Sunset & Flamingo), starting at 9:30 a.m.
There will be three divisions for the following age groups: Ages 7-9; Ages 10-12; and Ages 13-15. Each team will have 6 to 10 players. Practice schedules will be provided on a team by team basis for once or twice a week, beginning the week of September 22. Those who would like to be placed on the same team as another player must make their preference known at the time of registration. Fulfillment of these requests will depend on the space available on each team.
According to ChicagoBears.com, former linebacker Roosevelt Colvin, who retired in 2008, is staying active in football by helping to start up an NFL Flag League in Indianapolis. The three most important things Colvin likes to teach his flag football players are to have fun, be respectful and do your best.
Colvin believes flag football is a great tool for teaching kids the basics of football. “People don’t realize it, but flag football teaches a lot of the fundamentals on both sides of the ball that kids need,” Colvin said. “It’s hard to break down and grab a flag that’s dangling in the air. On the offensive side of the ball, everyone is eligible so the kids that usually get stuck playing on the front line get a chance to run or catch the football.”
To help launch this new youth recreation program in Hazelwood, Harvestfest organizers are adding an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition to this year’s list of activities for the Sept. 14th event. It will be held 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Howdershell Park, 6800 Howdershell Road.
The competition is free and open to all boys and girls, ages 6-15. All participants must show proof of age (i.e. birth certificate or baptismal record) at all levels of competition. Parents can register their children on-site by signing a parental Entry Form/Release of Liability form. All participants may register and compete in only one local competition.
Here are details about the format of the competition
Boys and girls will compete separately. Each participant is allowed one punt, one pass and one placekick as part of his or her competition. Kids ages 6-11 will be using a Wilson Junior Football Participants ages 12-15 will be using a Wilson Intermediate Football.
Scores are based on both distance and accuracy. A participant’s final score is his or her cumulative total for the three individual events. Scores are determined from where a participant’s punt/pass/kick first makes contact with the ground. Bounces or rolls do not add to the score. If a participant tries to punt, pass or kick and misses the ball completely, it does not count as an attempt, and another attempt is allowed. The top finisher in each of the boys’ and girls’ divisions from the five (5) age brackets of each local competition will advance to the sectional round.
