Too Bad Reverend Ike Couldn’t Finish His Career as a Ram

BY RANDY GARDNER

What a wild couple of weeks in the world of sports. Let’s start off with the Rams as two major moves were made. First off, the Rams released wide receiver Isaac Bruce. A lot of people including myself saw this coming even though we wished it never would. Isaac had been here since the beginning in St. Louis and was the face of this franchise. I was really hoping that he would get a chance to end his career here and have his jersey hung in the rafters.

Bruce’s jersey will hang from the rafters, but he will not play with this team when he finishes his great career.

I just can’t see Isaac in a 49ers uniform. How fun will it be though to see Bruce and Mike Martz roll back through town next year. Martz, the new offensive coordinator for the 49ers, will at least give Bruce some work—playing time that he never got over the last few years here in St. Louis.

Many would say that he was non existent over the past few years, but that was because of our style of offense. At least with the 49ers he will get a chance to make some catches and not be the 3rd receiver like he probably would be here.

Another big loss was the retirement off kicker Jeff Wilkins. This one really surprised me. I really felt like he had a few good years in him, but I guess after the struggles of last year and some health issue, he didn’t want to be like some of the other players in this league that hold on to long.

Brown Will Fill Wilkins Kicking Shoes

The Rams got a good replacement fast as we picked up the Seahawks old kicker, Josh Brown. This is a guy that is key in clutch situations, and has killed the Rams in the past. Now he is ours. There are a lot of other chances but we have a lot more to talk about other than Rams football including maybe Trent Green coming back as the backup QB. (The St. Louis native was to meet at Rams Park this week)

Staying with football, it will be really weird not to see Brett Favre on the field as he announced his retirement also. I was glad to see him comeback last year and play so -well, he just fell a little short of the big one though. This is another guy who probably after last year’s success could have played a few more years but decided to do it now and walk away on a high note. Good luck Brett, you are one of the class acts in football.

The River City Rage indoor football team opened their season last Sunday with a huge win over the Missouri Wildcats 86-6. That’s right, no typo 86-6. It was a great game and hopefully a sign of things to come this year. To check out the Rage schedule, go to www.ragefootball.com. The next column will focus on what the community things about what is going on with this Cardinals team and what should be done. A lot of mixed feelings out there right now.
