Hazelwood Central Girls Win Two Track Invites Including University City Repeat

Winning two Track & Field Invitational Meets in one week is rare but that is what exactly happened to the Hazelwood Central Ladies last week at Maplewood-Richmond Heights and University City.

On April 2 Hazelwood Central won the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Invitational by scoring 88 points and finishing 12 ahead of runner up Clayton. Among the other North County high schools North Technical was seventh (42), Pattonville was 10th(38) and Normandy was 15th (nine). Hazelwood Central won only two events as the Hawks won the 4×100-Meter Relay in 48.73 seconds while Alexis Miller won the High Jump clearing the bar at 5’.

Four days later, April 6, Hazelwood Central Ladies joined the schools men (see related story on Boys Track & Field) in repeating as winners of the Charlie Beck Invitational at University City. Hazelwood Central scored 117 points edging out second-place and defending Class Four State Champion Francis Howell by four points. Among other North County High Schools McCluer North was fifth (62), Ritenour was eighth (40), Hazelwood East was ninth (31), Incarnate Word Academy was 11th (19), Lutheran North was 13th (eight) and Jennings was 14 (five).

It was the second year in a row Hazelwood Central finished first and Francis Howell was second.

Alliah McClendon and Ashley Henderson won two individual events each. In a pair of Hazelwood Central one-two finishes McClendon won the 300-Meter Hurdles (48.88 seconds) over second place Brianna Smith (50.17 seconds) while Henderson won the 200-Meter Dash (25.42 seconds) over second place Prenecia Ponds (26.08 seconds). McClendon also won the 100-Meter Hurdles (15.73 seconds) while Henderson won the 100-Meter Dash (12.38 seconds).

Hazelwood Central won two relay events at University City. The Hawks won the 4×100-Meter Relay in 48.97 seconds and won the 4×200-Meter Relay in 1:41.20.

McCLUER SECOND AT TIMBERLAND — McCluer finished second at the Timberland Wolfpack Invitational, Wentzville, May 6, scoring 100 points while Cahokia, Ill., won the meet with 114. Hazelwood West was fourth (88.5) while Pattonville was 10th (22).

Shaelyn Grant led McCluer with two wins, both in Hurdles. Grant won the 100-Meter Hurdles in 14.89 seconds and the 300-Meter Hurdles in 45.64 seconds. McCluer won the 4×400-Meter Relay (4:09.68), Lydia Harold won the400-Meter Dash (1:01.88) and Alauna Ray won the High Jump (5’).

HAZELWOOD EAST, who finished tied for ninth with Farmington in the April 2 Festus Tiger Town Invitational had a win in each of the two meets they entered. At Festus B. Parker won the 100-Meter Dash (13.21 seconds) while at University City Whitney Royal won the Long Jump (16’6”).

HAZELWOOD WEST had a winner at Wentzville-Timberland as Lauralyn Rosenberger won the Pole Vault (10’).

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY had a winner in University City as Dasjah Mason won the High Jump (5’4”).
