Many Running Unopposed In North County Elections

North County residents will vote April 2 in several elections, although several candidates are running unopposed.

In Florissant, Jeff Caputa is running unopposed in Ward 4. This seat was formerly held by Keith English, who was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in November. The election is for the remainder of his term, which will end in April 2014.

Caputa ran against English in the last election for the seat in 2011. He is a Marine veteran and a member of the Cement Masons Local 527.

In Hazelwood, four council members are running unopposed. Carol Stroker (Ward 1), Don Ryan (Ward 3), Russell Todd (Ward 5), and Ro Hendon (Ward 7). All four are incumbents.

In the Ferguson Florissant School District, four candidates are running for two seats on the school board. Charles (Chuck) Henson, Leslie Suzanne Hogshead, Keith A. Brown, and Larry Thomas.

In the Black Jack Fire Protection District, incumbent Randolph E. Adler faces Andrew D. Winston for a six year term.  Incumbent David Calhoun faces Tony Weaver. Calhoun was appointed when director Sylvester Taylor was elected a state representative in 2010. This race is for the remainder of the term, which will end in April 2015.

In the Hazelwood School District, only two incumbents, Cheryl Latham and Karlton Thornton, filed for two seats. Thus, in order to save the district money, the election was cancelled.

In the city of Black Jack, four incumbents are running for City Council. Only one has an opponent. Rich Steigerwald (Ward 1), Albert N. Schroder (Ward 2), and John E. Taylor (Ward 4) are all unopposed. In Ward 3, incumbent Abdurageeb (AJ) White faces challenger Leo Simmons.

Simmons previously held the seat. He was defeated by Arnold Hinkle in 2010. (Each ward in Black Jack has two councilpersons.)

AbduRaqeeb (A J) Joseph White was elected to the council in 2009.

Also in Black Jack, incumbent John E. Walker faces challenger Randy L. Littlejohn for city treasurer.
