{"id":9735,"date":"2013-02-06T14:44:06","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T20:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=9735"},"modified":"2013-02-06T14:44:06","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T20:44:06","slug":"half-and-half-in-clayton-keeps-dining-divas-waiting-for-brunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=9735","title":{"rendered":"Half and Half in Clayton Keeps Dining Divas Waiting for Brunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/half-and-half-in-clayton-keeps-dining-divas-waiting-for-brunch\/lisa-kampeter-photo-revised-14\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9736\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9736 lazyload\" title=\"**Lisa Kampeter photo** revised\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Lisa-Kampeter-photo-revised-121x150.jpg?resize=121%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 121px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 121\/150;\" \/><\/a>The Dining Divas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Lisa Kampeter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January tends to be the month when everyone has good intentions to kick bad habits.\u00a0 A new year and a new you, they say.\u00a0 Well, the Dining Divas are no different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m working less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to eat healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m giving up shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to work out more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So \u201cwhy then,\u201d I was asked, \u201cdo we always kick off the new year with a brunch?\u201d\u00a0 Note to self.\u00a0 Next year, January Dining Divas should be at a salad bar or a health spa.<\/p>\n<p>The 2013 Dining Divas started the year with a brunch at Half and Half in Clayton.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard so many great things about the restaurant; I couldn\u2019t wait to try it out myself.\u00a0 What I wasn\u2019t prepared for, but I should have been, was the hour waiting for a table.\u00a0 They don\u2019t take reservations so larger parties have a longer wait.\u00a0 But even parties of 2 and 3 waited.\u00a0 For as many parties that turn right back around once they heard about the wait, there were just as many that stuck it out.\u00a0 That says something about the place.<\/p>\n<p>Even as a non-coffee drinker, the aroma as you entered was very inviting.\u00a0 You can step right up to the coffee bar and enjoy a mug as you wait.\u00a0 Families, college students, young couples\u2026all sorts of people like this hip breakfast and lunch hot spot.\u00a0 The bright white walls with rich blue coffee mugs and antique mason jars had a comfortable, yet busy, at home feel.<\/p>\n<p>Once we finally got seated, I was excited to hear orders of Blueberry Pancakes and Blackberry French Toast or Biscuits &amp; Gravy and Cinnamon &amp; Sugar Doughnuts. To my disappointment, those orders were just Diva dreams.\u00a0 We kept hearing, \u201cI\u2019m going to eat healthier\u201d in the backs of our minds.\u00a0 So we skipped the heavy sugar and high carb options.<\/p>\n<p>The Unadventurous Diva went for the Ham and Cheese Omelet, a safe choice.\u00a0 The Patient Diva (who arrived early to get the Divas on the list) loved the Chorizo Quesadilla with eggs, pico de gallo, and cheese.\u00a0 The surprise side of home fries may not have been on her weight loss plan, but after an hour of waiting for a table, she didn\u2019t care.\u00a0 The New Diva devoured the Veggie Hash that came topped with two sunny side up eggs.<\/p>\n<p>We had a few skip brunch for lunch.\u00a0 The Grilled Chicken on a brioche bun with avocado slaw was a popular choice.\u00a0 The Health-Conscious Divas skipped the chips that came with their sandwich for tasty, fresh fruit.\u00a0 The Turkey Club was a wise option for the Picky Diva.\u00a0 She loved the combination of lettuce and tomatoes mixed with aioli dressing.\u00a0 The thin and crispy chips melted in her mouth, and she didn\u2019t have an ounce of guilt as she enjoyed them.<\/p>\n<p>With the new year came new taxes.\u00a0 We chuckled when one Diva so passionately spoke about the tax on those earning more than $450,000.\u00a0 Did she win the lottery or has she been sidelining as a CEO in corporate America without us knowing?\u00a0 We debated social security and illegal immigration.\u00a0 And a few of us sighed in relief that we didn\u2019t have to talk about politics and campaigning any more.<\/p>\n<p>The only complaint in the group, aside for the wait, was, unfortunately, the coffee.\u00a0 The coffee was good, but not so good for it to cost $3.50.\u00a0 As one Diva mentioned, you can buy a bag of coffee from Starbucks and make several cups for that price.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us agreed that we\u2019d like to try Half and Half out again.\u00a0 We wouldn\u2019t wait that long.\u00a0 Most likely, I\u2019d go in a small group and go early.\u00a0 The young crowd will still be in bed.\u00a0 The hip crowd will think it\u2019s trendy to do a late brunch.\u00a0 And the older crowd won\u2019t want to pay $3.50 for a cup of coffee.\u00a0 For this non-coffee drinker, that\u2019s really not an issue.\u00a0 And instead of just dreaming about it, I will be ordering the
