{"id":9651,"date":"2013-01-25T12:31:51","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T18:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=9651"},"modified":"2013-01-25T12:31:51","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T18:31:51","slug":"hazelwoods-11th-annual-mlk-tribute-draws-big-crowd-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=9651","title":{"rendered":"Hazelwood\u2019s 11th Annual MLK  Tribute Draws Big Crowd Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>(Special to the Independent News)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nearly two hundred people filled the room to capacity for the City of Hazelwood\u2019s 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Tribute hosted by the Community Enrichment Commission on Jan. 20.\u00a0 The event, held at Civic Center East, featured \u00a0inspiring speeches, a rendition of Dr. King\u2019s \u201cI\u2019ve Been to the Mountain Top\u201d address and \u00a0the traditional candlelight ceremony.\u00a0 They also enjoyed quality entertainment provided by a professional jazz singer and the Liturgical Dancers of Antioch Baptist Church.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the 2013 theme of the Martin Luther King State Celebration, which is \u201cWomen Who Dare to Dream,\u201d Hazelwood\u2019s program featured two prominent African-American women who have made significant accomplishments in the fields of medicine and music.\u00a0 Charles Gooden, a representative of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., State Celebration Commission for Missouri, was on hand as well to remind people about how the law creating a MLK federal holiday came into existence.<\/p>\n<p>Gooden also told the audience that the state of Missouri ranks second to Georgia in the number of MLK events held every year honoring his legacy.\u00a0 Gooden encouraged those in attendance to continue moving forward and sharing their experiences about Dr. King with the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker was Ms. Brenda Battle, vice president for Care Delivery Innovation and assistant dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Chicago Medicine.\u00a0 In addition to being a registered nurse with a MBA degree, she is a St. Louis native who was named \u201cMost Influential Minority Leader\u201d by the St. Louis Business Journal in 2008.\u00a0 Battle also served on the board of the Missouri Foundation for Health and once directed the Center for Diversity and Cultural Competence at Barnes-Jewish Hospital St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>Battle told the audience that \u201cwe all have a responsibility for the cause of justice.\u00a0 We must be willing to defend the powerless and to make sure those who are oppressed get a fair break.\u201d\u00a0 She said Dr. King understood the underlying secret that in order to achieve success, one must be willing to help others achieve success.<\/p>\n<p>Another African-American woman, Jeanne Trevor, dazzled the crowd with her superb vocal performances. Accompanied by Rick Zelle (pianist), Eugene Thomas (saxophonist), and Willie Murray (drummer), she belted out jazzy renditions of \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful World,\u201d \u201cLet It Be,\u201d and \u201cJoshua Fought the Battle of Jericho.\u201d\u00a0 Known to many as the \u201cFirst Lady of Jazz,\u201d Trevor has performed in numerous musical theater productions at The Muny, Stages, the Black Repertory Theater, and Westport Theater.<\/p>\n<p>The audience gave Christopher Cross, an 8th grade student at Hazelwood Central Middle School and member of the Hazelwood School District\u2019s SAIL program for gifted students, a standing ovation after his speech and dramatic interpretation of Dr. King\u2019s last public address called \u201cI\u2019ve Been to the Mountain Top.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program also included several performances by the Liturgical Dancers of Antioch Baptist Church under the direction of Alba Brady-Florence.\u00a0 For one of the revues, the dancers dressed up and introduced themselves as different figures in Black American history before performing to the song titled, \u201cI Know Where I\u2019ve Been.\u201d\u00a0 Also, Reverend F. Delano R.
