{"id":9565,"date":"2013-01-11T15:09:42","date_gmt":"2013-01-11T21:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=9565"},"modified":"2013-01-11T15:09:42","modified_gmt":"2013-01-11T21:09:42","slug":"county-health-department-urges-importance-of-flu-vaccination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=9565","title":{"rendered":"County Health Department  Urges Importance of Flu Vaccination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Saint Louis County Department of Health is strongly advising that all residents be vaccinated against the seasonal flu.\u00a0 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most of the country is now experiencing high levels of influenza-like illness and the Saint Louis area is no exception.\u00a0 The health department has reported 1,464 cases so far this flu season compared to 1,446 for all of 2011-2012 flu season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhile the severity of this flu season remains unpredictable, we know that an increasing number of people are getting sick with the flu and we are getting reports of severe illness and hospitalizations,\u201d said Dr. Dolores J. Gunn, director of the department.<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized the importance of vaccination.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not just about protecting yourself.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t catch the flu, then you can\u2019t spread it to others,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>In Saint Louis County, the predominant strain this year has been influenza B, unlike most years when influenza A is more common.\u00a0 The symptoms of influenza B can sometimes be worse than those of influenza A.<\/p>\n<p>The flu vaccine provides protection against both strains.\u00a0 In fact, it offers protection against three different flu types, based on recommendations from experts around the world who determine each year which types are most likely to be in circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Residents still needing a seasonal flu vaccine can visit the Saint Louis County Department of Health\u2019s flu website to find out where they can be vaccinated: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.SaintLouisCountyFlu.com<strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other standard precautions being urged by the County Health Department are:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2022 Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u2022 Cough and sneeze into a tissue or into your sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Try to maintain a distance of three feet between you and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Stay home when you are sick or think you may be getting
