\"\"<\/a>A Boomer’s Journal<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Editors note:<\/span>\u00a0 This weeks column is a reprise of last years Christmas offering.\u00a0 We do not usually do this, but this story warrants retelling.\u00a0 Merry Christmas!)<\/em><\/p>\n

I had just scored a great deal on wrapping paper at Walgreens, and Jill was working on some presents for a family we were helping out through our daughter Katie\u2019s school.\u00a0 Not being much good at the task of paper and tape, I decided to pop in \u201cA Charlie Brown Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

This little piece probably comes\u00a0 closest to the perfect movie about the event that changed the world.\u00a0 It is one of hope and joy, forgiveness and love.\u00a0 And as Linus told the age-old story, I wondered about that night, and what it might look like if it happened today.<\/p>\n

It was so, so cold.\u00a0 Not just chilly, but bone-reaching cold.\u00a0The man was upset.\u00a0 That beat-up car they\u2019d borrowed\u00a0from his cousin was about to give up. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

They had just driven hundreds of miles to see about that carpenter job he found on the internet.\u00a0 With the housing market so bad lately, he\u2019d been laid off from three jobs in the last six months.\u00a0 And now with a baby on the way, well, it was no time to be out of work.\u00a0 On top of that, it looked like his wife Mary might be starting into labor any minute.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Joey. I\u2019m afraid it might be tonight,\u201d moaned the young woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, hon.\u00a0 Maybe that motel up ahead has a room, and we can find us a doctor,\u201d he said, trying to sound hopeful.\u00a0 He pulled the overheated Chevy into the lot, and took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cWish me luck, darlin\u2019,\u201d Joseph said, as the \u201cNo Vacancy\u201d sign flashed above the front door.<\/p>\n

Mary did more than that.\u00a0 She prayed, hard, to the Father of her child.\u00a0 This boy was going to be something special.\u00a0 The angel told her so back home.\u00a0 And once she convinced Joseph that she wasn\u2019t out of her mind, and then he had that visit in a dream from the same angel, they knew.\u00a0 Of course, most of the townsfolk were scoffing behind closed doors at their story.\u00a0 But that didn\u2019t stop them from believing.\u00a0 As her prayer ended, her heart sunk as she watched her husband slowly walk back to the car.\u00a0 Joseph climbed in, and put his head on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not good.\u00a0 They have nothing available.\u00a0 Some convention in town, something going on.\u00a0 But the old desk clerk said he knew of an abandoned farmhouse about a mile down this side road.\u00a0 We could check it out, at least for tonight.\u00a0 And his sister\u2019s best friend, she\u2019s a midwife.\u00a0 Said he\u2019d give her a call, have her look in on us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary was touched by the concern of the stranger. It heartened her, made her feel things just might be okay. \u201cWell, at least we\u2019ll be dry.\u00a0 We can make a fire\u2026 old farmhouses always have nice fireplaces,\u201d said the girl, trying her best to raise the man\u2019s spirits.<\/p>\n

As they pulled up to the house, the light drizzle turned to snow.<\/p>\n

Joseph brought in their meager belongings, and made up a bed by the hearth with a sleeping bag and some pillows.\u00a0 Mary managed to get a nice fire going and soon the dampness was turning. They shared a few of the canned sausages they bought at the Quickie Mart earlier.\u00a0 Mary had little appetite, in anticipation of what was to come.\u00a0 They drifted off to sleep, arm in arm, to the crackling of the fire.<\/p>\n

Joseph awoke to a new sound.\u00a0 His wife was in pain!\u00a0 The baby was coming.\u00a0 He set a few broken pieces of an old chair on the fire to heat a pan of water he\u2019d rigged above the flames.<\/p>\n

\u201cHurry, Joey\u2026 it\u2019s coming.\u201d\u00a0 The man bent low to help the young girl.\u00a0 No time to go for that midwife now.\u00a0\u00a0 Slowly, the small room filled with a bright light, brighter than any they\u2019d ever experienced.\u00a0 Then a soft hum, as if a children\u2019s choir was singing.\u00a0 Mary cried out once, twice, and the light and sound gradually dimmed.<\/p>\n

And there He lay.\u00a0 The man and woman knew this was a special moment.\u00a0 This child was The One. As they gazed in wonder, there was a shuffling at the door. The desk clerk, his sister, and the midwife poked their heads in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026 we heard this singin\u2019,\u201d said the clerk, \u201cand saw what looked like a sunrise, only it was midnight.\u00a0 So we hurried down here, but it looks like ya\u2019ll are okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s sister knelt by the mother, as her friend busied herself with the water and some towels.\u00a0 The old man set down a basket of fruit and chips and chicken sandwiches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe brought you a coupla gifts.\u00a0 Thought you might be hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

And so it may have been.\u00a0 No matter the time, no matter the age, His coming is marked by light and love, warmth and generosity. So may it also be this year, for all of you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
