{"id":9183,"date":"2012-11-14T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T18:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=9183"},"modified":"2012-11-14T12:15:59","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T18:15:59","slug":"some-thoughts-to-ponder-after-2012-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=9183","title":{"rendered":"Some Thoughts to Ponder After 2012 Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?attachment_id=9184\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9184\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9184 lazyload\" title=\"Tom Amsel. pg 2jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Tom-Amsel.-pg-2jpg-112x150.jpg?resize=112%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 112px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 112\/150;\" \/><\/a>A Boomer\u2019s Journal:<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Tom Anselm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I really wasn\u2019t planning on writing about politics this week.\u00a0 You know, because maybe we all could use a break.\u00a0 But the thoughts banging around in my noggin were begging to find their way out.<\/p>\n<p>So here is how it seems.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat Party won with a better ground game than the Republicans.\u00a0 That is, they most certainly got the votes where they needed them, and this was in states that were electorally rich.\u00a0 A look at a map of the United States that shows the \u201cgeography of the vote\u201d indicates that it is at least 3\/4ths red, or Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Even the battleground states of Florida and Ohio have only pockets of blue, the symbol for the Democrat element.\u00a0 However, those pieces brought the winners the full complement of many states\u2019 electoral votes.\u00a0 They knew where their supporters lived\u00a0\u00a0and how to get them to the polls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As for the losers in this years match-up, the Republicans put forth a national candidate for President who had promise, but was hampered by what some may rightly say was his back-and-forth on key issues, not really showing who he would truly be if he got to the Big Oval-shaped Office in January.\u00a0 It caused many who were conservatives to give luke-warm support and independents who might have made a move to have nothing on which to hang their votes.<\/p>\n<p>According to many experts who do this for a living, we may now be seeing a new paradigm of population.\u00a0 Power is shifting to women, younger people, and people of all colors.\u00a0 Also included are those supporters of gay marriage and abortion rights.\u00a0 Issues of perceived international weakness, unemployment at a consistently high level and a record-setting national debt just didn\u2019t register with these groups enough to tip the scales in favor of a change in top leadership.<\/p>\n<p>This may be the new demographic for the good old US of A.\u00a0 And the policies and philosophy of the Democrats seem to be favored as this shift takes place. So what are the other guys going to do about all this?<\/p>\n<p>Two consecutive presidential losses, no gains in the Senate and an apparent loss of direction do not bode well for them.\u00a0 Some say they need to keep doing what they have been doing, only get better at it.\u00a0 Others counsel to move more to the center of the spectrum, to draw in those of the new demographic.\u00a0 And still others clamor for an even-stronger shift to the right.\u00a0 One thing is certain.\u00a0 To do the same thing and expect different results is a sure sign of insanity.\u00a0 I doubt they are insane.<\/p>\n<p>We are identified as the United States of America.\u00a0 And we are mostly united, at least by geography.\u00a0 But don\u2019t we the people seem to be more splintered and fractured than at any time since the Civil War? Isn\u2019t ours today an ideological divide?\u00a0 A look at the latest totals of the popular vote indicates that Barack Obama collared some 61 million votes to nearly 58 million for Mitt Romney.\u00a0\u00a0 So Democrats got around 50.5% and Republicans 48%.\u00a0 Still pretty close, and within some of those statistical margins of error we heard so much about during all the campaign polling. So I\u2019m not so sure about calling this a mandate.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, here are some questions to ponder as we stumble into the future. Did the winning team just play better these last two times or is this a fundamentally new American electorate?\u00a0 Will the GOP change their game, and if so, how?\u00a0\u00a0 Have we allowed ourselves to be manipulated by the political operatives on all sides, to be squeezed into statistical pigeonholes so as to be more effectively persuaded?<\/p>\n<p>And doesn\u2019t it seem we are being clinically categorized as a people, seen not as Americans but as, for example, \u201ca\u00a0 white, male, 54-65, Catholic, retired, married, etc, etc?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abraham Lincoln borrowed from the Gospels when he said \u201ca house divided against itself cannot stand.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Are we now that house?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Boomer\u2019s Journal: &nbsp; By Tom Anselm I really wasn\u2019t planning on writing about politics this week.\u00a0 You know, because maybe we all could use a break.\u00a0 But the thoughts banging around in my noggin were begging to find their way out.
