The Hazelwood School Board received an update on safety issues from Col. Charles McCrary at the last board meeting who said the district “is not in a crisis,” as might have been projected on some recent television newscasts.<\/p>\n

McCrary and Assistant Superintendent Julia Burke spoke to the board on district wide safety. Several advisory committees presented reports to the board. McCrary was recently hired to help the district improve safety.<\/p>\n

“I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been here three weeks,” McCrary said. He said he has asked everyone for input on improving safety. “I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been bugging everyone from principles to maintenance workers.” <\/p>\n

“The district is not in crisis,” McCrary said. He said that the district could improve its safety and he was implementing ways to do so. “We need to be aware and proactive,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re looking at ways to better secure our buildings,” McCrary said. “I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve spent a lot of time at the middle schools. There are a lot of doors that need to be better secured.” McCrary said the school security officers had been good resources for determining where there were security issues. “The security officers are making recommendations,” he said. <\/p>\n

McCrary assured the board that he and the district were working to make the schools safer. “We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re staying on top of things.” <\/p>\n

McCrary was hired because of his expertise in school safety. He is author of the book Urban School Security from Behind ther Scenes He is a also a district resident and parent of two Hazelwood Central graduates.
