Reaches High And Low for Technical Rescue Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Members of the Hazelwood Fire Department recently completed a course in the Roco Rescue Training program. This program is designed to give firefighters the tools and skills needed to manage a rescue from a high angle such as a commercial building rooftop or a confined space such as a holding tank or deep culvert.\u00a0 This class not only provided a complete refresher for firefighters who had already taken the course, but also involved new recruits who had not yet received the training for certification.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe brought in a professional trainer with \u2018Chief Instructor\u2019 status from the Roco Rescue company to oversee the training for our department,\u201d said Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel.\u00a0 \u201cBattalion Chief Keith Shields has worked with us before.\u00a0 He is a consummate professional and has a great rapport with our firefighters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shields works for a municipal fire department near Vancouver, BC, Canada, where technical rescues are made on a regular basis. During his off-duty time, he serves as an instructor for the Roco Rescue company, training firefighters and rescuers all over North America.\u00a0 Shields provided four 10-hour training days for each of the three Hazelwood crews to complete this certification.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7889\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/hazelwood-fire-dept-reaches-high-and-low-for-technical-rescue-training\/haz-fire-dept-in-sky-pg-1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7889\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7889\" title=\"haz fire dept in sky  pg 1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/haz-fire-dept-in-sky-pg-1-375x500.jpg?resize=375%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precision rigging of ropes and pulleys is being used by this Hazelwood firefighter to lower a simulated victim.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With local business support, Hazelwood firefighters practiced rescues from the roof of the former Pillsbury building on Pershall Road.\u00a0 This required precision rigging of ropes and pulleys, as well as securing a simulated victim (one of the firefighters) to lower or hoist to safety.<\/p>\n<p>Confined space rescues were simulated using a large training prop on loan from Ameren Missouri.\u00a0 These types of rescues require a further layer of protective equipment and training for firefighters since these small areas often have poor air quality and other hazards.<\/p>\n<p>With their enhanced skills, Hazelwood firefighters will now continue with ongoing Roco training as part of their routine cycle of training exercises on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Hazelwood Fire Department recently completed a course in the Roco Rescue Training program.
