\"\"<\/a>You know it\u2019s not a good sign when you go to a restaurant\u2019s website, the same restaurant at which you are planning to have that night\u2019s dinner, and it says \u201cclosed for a private party.\u201d\u00a0 Well, the Dining Divas were a bigger group this month but not so big that we\u2019d need an entire restaurant.<\/p>\n

Perhaps they\u2019d discovered that we were the Dining Divas and were going to give us special treatment.\u00a0 Unlikely.\u00a0 Perhaps they\u2019d tried to cancel our reservations but couldn\u2019t reach us.\u00a0 More probable.\u00a0 But when the Investigative Diva called to find out the scoop, they told us to come on down.<\/p>\n

The Dining Divas tried out the Frontenac Grill on South Lindbergh with its Rat Pack appeal.\u00a0 When we walked in, some of us were surprised to find that we were the only guests.\u00a0 We later learned that the restaurant was closing for a post-funeral gathering.\u00a0 I guess because our party was large enough and our reservation was early enough, they accommodated us before the private get-together.<\/p>\n

We also learned that the Frontenac Grill is one of the late and the great Mike Talayna\u2019s projects.\u00a0 Unfortunately, he\u2019d never see this dream of his as he died right before the restaurant opened.<\/p>\n

Our waiter made us feel welcome immediately, letting us know where our table was while we waited on others.\u00a0 As we waited at the bar, the bartender suggested some appetizer specials.\u00a0 We ordered a few before happy hour ended.\u00a0 Yet, when we wanted to move to our table to eat the appetizers, he wasn\u2019t happy with us.\u00a0\u00a0 And he said we couldn\u2019t eat at our table.\u00a0 Confused, we looked to our waiter who happily seated us.<\/p>\n

The look on each uninformed Diva as they walked in the restaurant was hilarious, especially with the \u201cclosed for a private function\u201d sign on the door.\u00a0 And as the guests from the private party started showing up, they looked at us with concern too.\u00a0 Our welcome feeling quickly turned to feelings of being intruders.<\/p>\n

When the Investigative Diva called in advance to make sure our reservation was still good, she asked about the private party.<\/p>\n

The person said it was okay, but that we\u2019d have to leave as soon as we were done eating.\u00a0 That comment did not make us happy.\u00a0\u00a0 First of all, the Divas do not like to be rushed.\u00a0 We like to enjoy our time together.\u00a0 We only see each other once a month.\u00a0 We have a lot of catching up to do.<\/p>\n

Secondly, we are considerate people.\u00a0 Had we been told that a private function involving a funeral was happening later that evening, we would have gladly chosen another place.\u00a0 Of course, we would have needed more than a couple hours notice.\u00a0 All evening, we felt out of place.<\/p>\n

We were happy to have the Rookie Diva join us for the first time.\u00a0 She\u2019s also be known as the Long Distance Diva as she lives in Wright City.\u00a0 We were also thrilled to have the Colorful Diva back after a long absence.\u00a0 It was a shame that she couldn\u2019t find the place and that she had to rush through her dinner.\u00a0 Her descriptive stories are not meant to be rushed.\u00a0 So we all suffered.<\/p>\n

A few Divas started off with the Caesar Salad, and its garlicky flavor and anchovy based dressing made quite an impression.\u00a0 The House Salad was just as good as the Talayna\u2019s salad.\u00a0 There was nothing special about the Toasted Ravioli and Coconut Shrimp appetizers, except for maybe the five dollar price tag for each.\u00a0 The Eggplant Parmesan appetizer was covered with sauce and cheeses and is large enough to be a meal.<\/p>\n

Thrilled to hear \u201cexcellent choice\u201d when she ordered Risotto special, the Picky Diva thought it was a letdown.\u00a0 She hasn\u2019t found a risotto as good as at the one she had at the Diva\u2019s outing at Mia Rosa in the Grove Neighborhood.\u00a0 Unfortunately, that restaurant has since closed its doors for good.<\/p>\n

The Pasta Con Broccoli was sure to be a safe bet for the Educator Diva, but it turned out to not be such a wise choice.\u00a0 Good but bland.\u00a0 Actually, that was the comment regarding several of our dishes.\u00a0 They were good but lacked in flavoring.<\/p>\n

We loved the Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza with Italian Sausage.\u00a0 The sauce was thick and rich with tomatoes and a perfect amount of sweetness.\u00a0 The crust reminded us of the crust at Pi.\u00a0 Delicious.\u00a0 However, the sausage was practically non-existent.\u00a0 The NY Style Pizza was another good option and another reason to revisit the place when it is \u201copen to the public\u201d.<\/p>\n

Perhaps we should give the Frontenac Grille another try.\u00a0 The place was overpriced, but if we get there before 6 p.m.\u00a0 appetizers and pizza are $5.\u00a0 We really enjoyed the pizza and the salad so maybe that\u2019s what we should stick with next time.\u00a0 Perhaps when it truly is regular business hours we\u2019d have a much better vibe.\u00a0 And when \u201cFly Me to the Moon\u201d is playing in the background, we\u2019ll just enjoy the music, and we won\u2019t get the feeling that everyone thinks we\u2019re from Mars.<\/p>\n
