In celebration of reading and Dr. Seuss\u2019 birthday, kindergarten through third-grade students at Jamestown Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District welcomed a special visitor, the Cat in the Hat.<\/p>\n

Daniel Awodeyi, a first-grade student at Jamestown Elementary School, participates in a reader\u2019s theatre production of \u201cGreen Eggs and Ham.\u201d Each time the words \u2018box\u2019 and \u2018fox\u2019 were read aloud, Awodeyi held up the props to add emphasis to the story.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Nearly 230 students participated in an assembly in association with National Education Association\u2019s Read Across America. The celebration began with a reader\u2019s theatre production of \u201cGreen Eggs and Ham\u201d featuring a team of first and third-grade readers. As the narrators read the classic tale, students held up props as key words were read aloud \u2013 box and fox, house and mouse, and boat and goat.<\/p>\n

Next, the audience played a trivia game, \u201cWho Wants to be a Seussionaire?\u201d Working in teams, students answered multiple-choice questions from books such as \u201cOne Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,\u201d \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas\u201d and \u201cThe Cat in the Hat\u201d by responding with one, two or three fingers in the air.<\/p>\n

After the game, the Cat in the Hat made his appearance, waving to a chorus of cheers. Chris Guinther, president of the Missouri National Education Association, introduced the students to the Cat in the Hat. She encouraged the students to read, to do their best to become good readers, and to ask for help from adults as they learn to read. She also asked the students to take a reading pledge. Together, the children repeated the pledge after Guinther as the Cat in the Hat looked on.<\/p>\n

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n
