RaShawn Johnson, a reading teacher at Berkeley Middle School, is the Ferguson-Florissant School District\u2019s Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

RaShawn Johnson is surprised when Berkeley Miiddle principal Steve Lawler asks to chat with her outside class. It was not for discipline but to name her the district Teacher of the Year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A small cadre of administrators gathered together this afternoon to make the announcement and the teacher\u2019s day. Her principal, Steve Lawler, was key to the surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Johnson,\u201d Lawler announced from the hallway, just cracking the door to her room, \u201cCan you come outside for a moment? I need to talk to you about something.\u201d<\/p>\n

She walked outside and into an ambush.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Johnson, you are the district\u2019s Teacher of the Year,\u201d Supt. Art McCoy, , announced with a wide smile. \u201cI want you to stay encouraged and know that you are one of our best and brightest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to admire how she connects with her seventh- and eighth-grade students. \u201cYou teach some of the most exciting lessons that I have ever seen in the district,\u201d McCoy said. \u201cIt\u2019s good to see our students know so much about depth of knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hearing that, this teacher \u2013 who has a love for reading and writing \u2013 was at a loss for words.<\/p>\n

All that surfaced in the excitement was, \u201cThank you.\u201d Followed by, \u201cThank you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in shock,\u201d exclaimed Johnson! \u201cI can\u2019t teach for the rest of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Principal Steve Lawler said the accolade is well deserved. \u201cShe is obviously a wonderful teacher,\u201d Lawler said. \u201cThe thing that is most telling is the positive attitude she shows everyone and especially the kids. She helps them develop self-esteem and confidence. She is both creative and dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Art McCoy, superintendent; RaShawn Johnson, Teacher of the Year and reading teacher at Berkeley Middle School; and Steve Lawler, principal, enjoy a moment together.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Johnson has taught in the district six years but has 13 years of experience as an educator. She has also taught in the Normandy School District.<\/p>\n

Her love for children and education started at home. \u201cMy family has a legacy of educators on my father\u2019s side, so it was fitting that I would follow in their footsteps,\u201d she said. Johnson is notorious for wearing costumes and creating murals, posters and games to engage her students.<\/p>\n

She earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in elementary education at Fontbonne University and master\u2019s degree in education curriculum and instruction at National Louis University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
