Hazelwood West High School opens the 2007 Prep Football Season Aug. 30 at home as the Wildcats host Suburban North Conference play at 4 p.m. against the McCluer Comets.<\/p>\n

For years McCluer plays their home opener on a Friday afternoon and the Comets will do that Sept. 7 against Hazelwood Central. This opener at Hazelwood West is on a Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Hazelwood West is rebounding from a 2-8 season a year ago, including a 2-5 record in the Suburban North. That includes a 33-15 win over McCluer last year on a Friday afternoon (Sept. 1, 2006) at McCluer South-Berkeley since McCluer High had problems with field irrigation. McCluer was 4-6 last year but 1-6 in the Suburban North and two of the three non-conference wins were in Class Five, District Two against two Gateway Athletic Conference South Division teams, Troy-Buchanan and Wentzville-Holt.<\/p>\n

At 6 p.m. Riverview Gardens hosts Ritenour in another Aug. 30 Suburban North contest. Riverview Gardens defeated Ritenour last year, 42-27, in route to a 5-5 season that includes a 3-4 conference record. Ritenour was winless in 10 overall games and seven Suburban North games and the Huskies have not won a game since beating Riverview 6-0 in OT on Sept. 16, 2005.<\/p>\n

Ritenour currently holds the Wagon Wheel, the traveling trophy in what has been an annual game with Normandy, since Sept. 3, 2005. Last year and this year Normandy and Ritenour can not play each the Wagon Wheel game because Normandy is now in the Suburban East Conference and Ritenour plays three other non-conference games in Class Six, District Two, in addition to seven Suburban North games.<\/p>\n

At 7 p.m. Lutheran North visits Clayton\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Gay Field as the Crusaders meets the Clayton High Greyhounds in a non-conference game. Last year Lutheran North was a Class Three State Quarterfinalist as the Crusaders lost in the Quarterfinal game to Owensville, 32-21 but the Crusaders opened the 9-3 season, including 4-2 in the ABC League with a 20-14 win at Clayton. Meanwhile Clayton was 5-5 overall and their 4-1 record was second to Jennings.<\/p>\n

Friday, Aug. 31 Trinity Catholic hosts defending Archdiocesan Athletic Association champion St. Dominic in a 7 p.m. AAA game. Trinity is coming off a school-best 5-5 overall, 3-3 in the AAA and 2-1 in Class Three, District Five. St. Dominic was 6-0 in the AAA, 8-2 overall including a 25-0 win over Trinity but was 1-2 in Class Four, District Eight including a 42-7 loss to eventual Class Four runner up Hannibal.
