{"id":7002,"date":"2011-12-29T11:23:22","date_gmt":"2011-12-29T17:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=7002"},"modified":"2011-12-29T11:23:22","modified_gmt":"2011-12-29T17:23:22","slug":"hazelwood-hometown-son-is-the-new-permanent-fire-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=7002","title":{"rendered":"Hazelwood Hometown Son is The New Permanent Fire Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/hazelwood-hometown-son-is-the-new-permanent-fire-chief\/new-hazelwood-fire-chief\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7005\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7005\" title=\"new Hazelwood fire chief\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/new-Hazelwood-fire-chief-.jpg?resize=450%2C384\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave Radel<\/strong>, a 33-year career firefighter with the Hazelwood Fire Department, Dave Radel has worked his way up the management ladder from backstep firefighter to fire inspector to fire captain to deputy chief and to assistant chief for four years.\u00a0 He is a native of Hazelwood, and still lives in this community with his family.<\/p>\n<p>After Hazelwood\u2019s Fire Chief Jim Matthies announced his retirement and chose June 30 as his last day, the department\u2019s Assistant Fire Chief Dave Radel stepped in and took the helm as leader without much fanfare.\u00a0 Radel\u2019s outstanding performance over the past several months has prompted City of Hazelwood officials to appoint him as permanent Fire Chief effective Dec.\u00a0 7.<\/p>\n<p>Radel is a hometown kid who grew up in Hazelwood during his childhood years.\u00a0 He remembers walking through Howdershell Park where the fire station is now as a young boy when he lived on Teson Road.\u00a0 In 1972, he graduated from Hazelwood High School which was the only high school for Hazelwood School District at the time.<\/p>\n<p>His 33-year career with the Hazelwood Fire Department began in July 1978.\u00a0 \u201cI started working as a firefighter with the rank of private at the age of 24,\u201d Radel said.\u00a0 \u201cSince then, I have served as a backstep firefighter, which is the person who rides backward on the fire truck, rescue squad member, fire inspector, fire captain, deputy chief, and for the last four years, assistant chief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Radel sharpened his leadership skills by representing Hazelwood firefighters in the Professional Firefighters of Eastern Missouri \u2013 International Association of Fire Fighters Union Local 2665 for 12 years.\u00a0 He also earned his license as an arson investigator from both the Missouri Division of Fire Safety and the State Fire Marshal.\u00a0 In addition, he has qualifications as an emergency medical technician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these positions combined have given me a wide perspective and valuable experience I hope will serve me well as Fire Chief,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been fortunate to step into a situation where the department has been managed extraordinary well by my predecessor.\u00a0 I intend to carry on the department\u2019s tradition of being one of the best fire protection agencies in St. Louis County by never compromising on high-quality equipment or training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Radel is in the process of establishing some committees within the department to give him advice on which areas need upgrades or improvements.<\/p>\n<p>According to Radel, \u201cOur department has some of the best firefighters and paramedics in the field.\u00a0 I\u2019m extremely confident in their ability to provide Hazelwood residents with fire protection and emergency medical services that are second to none.\u00a0 We will continue setting the bar higher under my watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to his appointment as permanent fire chief of the Hazelwood Fire Department, Radel said, \u201cI would like to thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve in this capacity as fire chief.\u00a0 My family moved to Hazelwood in 1959.\u00a0 I grew up here, and I\u2019ve chosen to raise my children here.\u00a0 I still live four miles down the road from our main engine house.\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe how much I\u2019ve been blessed to have a job that is centered on helping people during their most vulnerable times.\u00a0 It is this same type of attitude I want to instill in every employee of my department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Radel, a 33-year career firefighter with the Hazelwood Fire Department, Dave Radel has worked his way up the management ladder from backstep firefighter to fire inspector to fire captain to deputy chief and to assistant chief for four years.\u00a0 He is a native of Hazelwood, and still lives in this community with his family.
