This property is east of Lowe\u2019s on the south side of Highway 67.<\/p>\n<p>The plan developer THF presented to the council for the 25-acre site includes a Wal-Mart Supercenter approximately 150,000 square feet in size. The site would also have an outlet for other retail or a restaurant. It would have 740 parking spaces, which conforms to the city\u2019s parking requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The plans from THF include a new entrance to the property at Sunswept Drive. This entrance would have a traffic signal and be the main entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Several council members had questions about the increased traffic a new retail development would bring to the area. There were concerns that the signal at Sunswept would be too close to other signals, and concerns that traffic would back up past New Halls Ferry to enter from Lindbergh.\u00a0 There were also concerns about the screening that the developer would have to shield the development from nearby residences.<\/p>\n<p>City Attorney John Hessel said that the council was not voting on anything at the meeting. The public hearing was for the request for rezoning only. The council does not have a bill for first reading for the rezoning yet.\u00a0 The council would first have to rezone the property, and then Wal-Mart would have to have plans approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and by the council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other action<\/strong>, the council passed a bill allowing a new electronic sign for the Commercial Bank at 400 West Washington, and passed a bill allowing an exterior remodeling of the Dairy Queen at 2678 North Highway 67.<\/p>\n<p>The council also held a first reading on the bill approving the budget for the next fiscal year.
