\u00a0The Hazelwood City Council\u00a0 approved a new solid waste and recycling contract with Allied Waste Services which took effective on Nov. 1.\u00a0 As part of this agreement, Allied began delivering free 95-gallon trash containers to all one- and two-family residences last week in preparation of automated residential pick-up of trash and recycling beginning at the first of the month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To implement this automated collection process, Allied will be using trucks with mechanical arms that lift the containers and deposit the debris into a trash\/recycling compacter.\u00a0 The new 95-gallon trash containers are constructed with durable plastic, wheels and a lid to make them sturdy enough to withstand the constant handling.<\/p>\n

Residents should place both of their carts, trash and recycling, at the curb before 6 a.m. on pick-up day.\u00a0 The containers need to be at least one foot from the curb or edge of street, and at least three feet away from all other objects.<\/p>\n

Because Allied is providing new trash containers, Hazelwood residents will no longer need to purchase their own.\u00a0 Those who are currently renting a cart from Allied for trash will no longer receive a bill for it.<\/p>\n

Hazelwood residents are urged to continue using their 65-gallon recycling cart for recyclable materials.\u00a0 Any residents having problems with their existing recycling container can request a larger size automated recycling container for free by contacting Allied\u2019s Customer Service at (636) 947-5959.<\/p>\n

Another benefit to Hazelwood residents is a decrease in their monthly fee for solid waste and recycling curbside services.<\/p>\n

Instead of paying the current rate of $17.79, their rate will drop to $14.79 \u2013 a $3 discount starting Nov. 1.\u00a0 Also, the senior\/disabled rate will be reduced to $7.40 per month.<\/p>\n

In order to qualify for this 50% senior discount, Hazelwood residents must be at least 62 years of age or older.\u00a0 The same discount is available to Head of Household residents who are 100% disabled and can verify this with\u00a0 documentation from Social Security.\u00a0 Forms needed for the discount are available at the Public Works Office in Hazelwood\u2019s City Hall, 414 Elm Grove.<\/p>\n

Applicants must bring the following documentation with them: 1) a copy of their driver\u2019s license that confirms birth date, name and address; or 2) documentation proving 100% disability from the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n

Allied\u2019s new contract with the City of Hazelwood also calls for going to once a week service.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an effort to promote recycling, there is a growing trend to conserve resources.\u00a0 Not only would this help reduce the frequency of collections in our community, but also it would lower the rate of wear and tear on the City\u2019s infrastructure with fewer trucks on the road.\u00a0 In addition, it would enhance the beauty of our neighborhoods by reducing the amount of trash containers sitting out by the curb on a daily basis,\u201d said David C. Stewart, PE\/CPM, Director of Public Works\/City Engineer, City of Hazelwood.<\/p>\n
