Somewhat of a Letdown For The <\/strong>Dining Divas at La Gra in Dogtown<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a cool, August evening.\u00a0 It had been weeks since the concept of dining outdoors had crossed our minds.\u00a0 But this rare night, the Dining Divas couldn\u2019t pass up dinner on the patio, or in this case, on the sidewalks of Dogtown.<\/p>\n

At a restaurant called La Gra, I\u2019d lead many to believe the name was followed by \u201cTa\u00a0 Dah\u201d with the anticipation I placed on going there.\u00a0 A previous visit convinced me the girls would love it there.\u00a0 During my first visit, great food and a great atmosphere was a great surprise at the place I\u2019d driven past several times and commented, \u201cWonder what that\u2019s like?\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s tapas (or small plates) so that wasn\u2019t too unusual from the many other restaurants we\u2019ve tried.\u00a0 The difference was the Italian part.\u00a0 We\u2019d never been to a place that focused on Italian tapas.<\/p>\n

The first impression I got from La Gra the previous time I was there was trumped by the very first impression I got from this visit.\u00a0 After being seated outside, we were greeted by an extremely handsome waiter.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t bother us that some Divas were late.\u00a0 He kept having to come back to get drink orders for those that staggered in.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t bother us that the Noncommittal Diva could make up her mind on what to order.\u00a0 He kept having to come back to take more orders.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t even bother us when he brought the wrong drinks or forgot our food.\u00a0 It was a treat enough to savor his handsome shyness every visit back to the table.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Hotness, tapas translates to \u201cfood arriving at random times\u201d as well as \u201cpizza taking a really long to prepare.\u201d\u00a0 In Basic English, the waiter was also the bartender which led us to believe the chef was also the bus boy as well as the limo driver out front.<\/p>\n

Which leads me to this.\u00a0 I love Dogtown.\u00a0 I love Seamus McDaniel\u2019s.\u00a0 I love the neighborhood.\u00a0 The \u201creal\u201d St. Patrick\u2019s Day parade happens there every year.\u00a0 There\u2019s lots of reasons to appreciate Dogtown.\u00a0 However, I have to admit I was surprised to see a limo pull to the front of the restaurant and drop someone off.\u00a0 This is just Dogtown, right?\u00a0 Nothing fancy here.<\/p>\n

My gut reaction was to panic.\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t I go with the sassy summer dress I pulled out of the closet this morning?\u00a0 And I should have worn a nicer pair of heels rather than the comfortable, safe pair I wore to work.\u00a0 Who would have thought we needed to be fancy in Dogtown?<\/p>\n

But then I looked around.\u00a0 There was the couple on a date.\u00a0 Casual summer attire.\u00a0 And the older woman with her sundress only partially zipped up in the back (\u201cFriends shouldn\u2019t let friends dress this way,\u201d said the Concerned Diva.)\u00a0 And about every 10 minutes, someone walked right passed our table taking their dog on a leisurely stroll (very appropriate for \u201cDogtown.\u201d)\u00a0 I relaxed.\u00a0 My simple sandals and work attire were just fine.<\/p>\n

I guess once the chef parked the limo, he returned to his cooking responsibilities.\u00a0 And in pure tapas fashion, it came piecemeal.\u00a0 Which was okay with us because we all enjoyed taste-testing what everyone else ordered.<\/p>\n

And it gave us more time to talk.\u00a0 We talked about the College-Bound Diva and her extreme fear of returning to the classroom.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to hear her making the choice to go back to school.\u00a0 We talked about the Educator Teacher and the incarcerated student whose \u201cone phone call\u201d was to her teacher.\u00a0 That\u2019s a dedicated student.\u00a0 And we talked about the Disaster-Relief Diva and her trip to Joplin.\u00a0 The devastation is incredible and the need for help is still there.<\/p>\n

The Italian Diva is a real diva when it comes to Italian food.\u00a0 She shared the Stuffed Artichoke with the Greek Diva, and although they both enjoyed it, the Italian Diva said she\u2019ll stick with the one on the Pasta House menu.<\/p>\n

Reminiscing back to a year ago for the Newlywed Diva\u2019s shower, several of us were excited to have the Arancini.\u00a0 The shower version was made with rice, spices, and mozzarella.\u00a0 At La Gra, they added in mushrooms and peas.\u00a0 The add-ons didn\u2019t add to the flavor.\u00a0 Perhaps we were biased because even though La Gra\u2019s version was tasty, we preferred our recipe.\u00a0 But the effort it takes to make it at home is reason enough to have La Gra\u2019s again.<\/p>\n

Several ordered the Chicken Speidini.\u00a0 We debated over the best in town.\u00a0 Rizzo\u2019s tops the list in Florissant.\u00a0 La Gra\u2019s version does not spare the lemons.\u00a0 One Diva found it tasty while another thought it was too much.\u00a0 The Martha Stewart Diva added garlic and black pepper to her leftovers the next day, and that really made a difference.<\/p>\n

The Toasted Ravioli is barely worth mentioning, but the pizza at La Gra definitely is.\u00a0 The West Park, also know as Italian sausage and portabella mushroom pizza, with its thick, crispy crust was worth the wait.\u00a0 The leftovers the Newlywed Diva brought home to her husband surely showed the love she has for him.\u00a0 After quite some time, a fantastic super-sized Tamm Avenue pizza, also referred to by the Noncommittal Diva as the pepperoni, pepperoni, pepperoni pizza, arrived.\u00a0 Sir Cuteness got this order wrong too.\u00a0 Ahhh, but what did it matter.<\/p>\n

Overall, La Gra..ta dah turned into La Gra\u2026blah.\u00a0 The food was much more pleasing my first time.\u00a0 But we can\u2019t blame our waiter.\u00a0 What he lacked in efficiency he made up for with his pearly whites and attractive demeanor.\u00a0 I\u2019m confident that the restaurant just had an off night.\u00a0 And I\u2019m definitely going back for more pizza.\u00a0 Besides, the third time\u2019s the charm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
