In 1968 this vision became a reality, as 35 separate locations participated in the celebration known as Summerfest. Within two years the event migrated to one location on the city’s downtown lakefront, now known as Henry Maier Festival Park.

The festival has grown and evolved to what is now recognized as “the World’s Largest Music Festival” and Milwaukee’s cornerstone summer celebration of music, sun and fun.

This year’s 40th anniversary festival will run 11 days, June 28-July 8 at Henry W. The 23,000 capacity Marcus Amphitheater, 10 grounds stage areas, a children’s theater, sports court, 45 diverse food and beverage vendors and four unique marketplaces, all set against the beautiful Lake Michigan and downtown backdrops, create a festival experience like no other.

Each year the Marcus Amphitheater welcomes top national tours to entertain music fans. This year’s lineup includes: June 28, Steeley Dan; June 30, The Fray with OK Go and Mae; July 2, Roger Waters; July 3, John Mayer, July 4, Tool; July 5, Bon Jovi and July 8, Toby Keith. There is a separate admission with reserved seating for the headliner shows at the Marcus Amphitheater.

However, not only does the Marcus Amphitheater host national headlining acts, but the grounds stages also feature many of today’s hottest acts, along with classic favorites.

Returning to Summerfest for the second year, the CMT Summer Concert Series will again present three one-hour concert television specials.
