‘Judy Moody Not So Bummer Summer’ <\/em><\/strong>May be ‘Snoresville’ Event For Fans<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Even though it\u2019s not officially summer until next week, most of us would agree that up to this point it\u2019s been one sizzling, seismic cicada summer. For most, would qualify it as the start\u2014particularly if we have flooding of \u201cbiblical proportion\u201d\u2014of a bummer summer.\u00a0 Usually, we would look to the great \u201cpopcorn\u201d movies to take our minds off summer\u2019s discomforts.<\/p>\n

But, there is one movie just released, ironically called, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer<\/em> Summer,<\/em> that, regrettably, is about as annoying as the cicadas, and is not recommended as a remedy for the summer time blues.<\/p>\n

Adapted from the popular Judy Moody series of books by writers Kathy Waugh and Megan McDonald, the story of the messy-headed kid, in the kindest terms, strains to be fun. I could only think a few minutes into the chaotically cute proceedings, \u201cWhere\u2019s Lindsay Lohan when you need her?\u201d<\/p>\n

Director John Schultz pummels kids and adults alike with the manic perkiness of Waugh and McDonald\u2019s conception of Judy (Jordana Beatty), who is obnoxiously nice, with not a hint of the pre-pubescent rebel (there\u2019s a wonderful lack of electronic gadgets glued to Judy\u2019s ear or fingers).<\/p>\n

Her active imagination pops up on screen in animation, her verbal virtuosity doesn\u2019t get any more disrespectful than \u201choly macaroni\u201d and she\u2019s nice to her little brother (Parris Mosteller), who actually goes by the nickname of \u201cStink.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Judy, a fate worse than death is the prospect of a \u201csnoresville summer;\u201d and it looks like she\u2019s headed there when her friends are off for exciting adventures (good for plenty of \u201cthrilladelic\u201d points the kids are competing for) in Borneo and at a circus camp.<\/p>\n

Not only don\u2019t her parents have the means to send Judy somewhere cool like that, they\u2019re leaving her and Stink while they help out Mom\u2019s folks.\u00a0 If they\u2019re off to their other grandma\u2019s, there\u2019s nothing to do but \u201cpick scabs.\u201d\u00a0 And, Stink might have to put his plans to capture Big Foot on hold.<\/p>\n

Enter their free-spirited Aunt Opal (Heather Graham), a hippie-style flower child and \u201cguerilla\u201d artist, who\u2019s eaten cockroaches in Bali and ridden ostriches in Kenya and who is completely in tune with Judy\u2019s quest to check off the \u201cdares\u201d on her elaborate chart.<\/p>\n

With her with-it sitter providing relaxed, sympatico supervision, Judy concentrates on racking up thrill points; with an intensity that eventually forces Stink to call her a \u201cbig, wet, fun-sponge!\u201d Vomit, poop, zombie movies, an accident with glue and an encounter with Big Foot true believers at a pet store\u2019s secret \u201ccave\u201d fill out Judy\u2019s \u201cnot bummer summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to say whether these two staples of the genre could have saved the Not Bummer Summer, but I sat glumly through the screening thinking, \u201cThank goodness, at least it\u2019s not in 3-D, and Judy and Stink aren\u2019t giving a villain a going-over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans of Judy Moody will be bummed and their parents will be snoring.\u00a0 A Smokewood Entertainment production; Relativity release, rated PG.<\/p>\n
