{"id":5784,"date":"2011-05-27T09:15:05","date_gmt":"2011-05-27T15:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=5784"},"modified":"2011-05-27T09:15:05","modified_gmt":"2011-05-27T15:15:05","slug":"movie-review-kung-fu-panda-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=5784","title":{"rendered":"Movie review: Kung Fu Panda 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5785\" title=\"kung fu panda2 pg 11\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/kung-fu-panda2-pg-11-300x193.jpg?resize=300%2C193\" alt=\"kung fu panda2 pg 11\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Po, <\/strong>the\u00a0hero of\u00a0<em>Kung Fu Panda 2<\/em>, stars the voice of\u00a0Jack Black in the new animated film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Maggie Scott<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The summer film fireworks start early with <em>Kung Fu Panda 2,<\/em> the animated sequel to DreamWorks Animation\u2019s 2008 hit; the second title of what looks to be a very popular franchise whose leading \u201cman child\u201d is the irrepressibly lovable panda, Po (voice of Jack Black).<\/p>\n<p>Po has become a fighting legend after defeating the evil snow leopard Tai Lung; and his father, Mr. Ping (voice of James Hong), doesn\u2019t hesitate to capitalize on Po\u2019s fame as the \u201cDragon Warrior\u201d to pack in the customers at his noodle shop.<\/p>\n<p>While Po is still easily distracted by food (the film opens with him trying to set a record for how many bean buns he can stuff in his mouth).\u00a0 His Furious Five compatriots (tiger, mantis, snake, monkey and crane) are careful not to rest on their laurels, but to be ever vigilante for any threat to the Valley of Peace.<\/p>\n<p>News of marauding wolves stealing metal from villages interrupts Po\u2019s \u201cinner peace\u201d lesson with Master Shifu (voice of Dustin Hoffman). It seems that a Lord Shen (voice of Gary Oldman) is intent on declaring it the Year of the Peacock; vowing that \u201call China would bow at his feet,\u201d with the subjugation of opponents by his battery of super cannons.\u00a0 The origin of Shen\u2019s dreams of mastery appears to be parents who hated him.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that happiness must be taken, and happiness for him seems to be\u00a0destroying pandas based on a prophecy by his soothsayer (voice of Michelle Yeoh) of his defeat at the hands of a black and white warrior.<\/p>\n<p>Taking over Gongman City, Shen has imprisoned formerly formidable fighters: Master Ox (voice of Dennis Haysbert) and Master Croc (voice of Jean-Claude Van Damme), who tell Po that it is \u201ctime to surrender, kung-fu is dead.\u201d\u00a0 They are afraid that resistance will mean the massacre of everyone.\u00a0 But, the fight for Po gets personal when he is able to access memories of his panda mother, dead at the hands of Shen\u2019s thugs, whose sacrifice to save Po led to his adoption by a goose running a noodle shop.<\/p>\n<p>Confronting violence with inner peace and understanding that where you came from is not as important as \u201cwho you choose to be, now\u201d are the expected moral lessons most kids stories these days seek to transmit.\u00a0 The lessons here won\u2019t stick in the mind so much as the amazing animation (3-D), and the hysterically cheeky voice work by Jack Black.\u00a0 Po comes off like a combo of Lou Costello and \u201cthe Dude\u201d Liebowski; and he is a complete delight.\u00a0 A must see for the kids and deserving of consideration for next year\u2019s Oscars.\u00a0 Rated PG.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Po, the\u00a0hero of\u00a0Kung Fu Panda 2, stars the voice of\u00a0Jack Black in the new animated film.
