\nI\u2019m being upfront here.\u00a0 This month\u2019s Dining Divas choice had the odds in its favor before we even showed up.\u00a0 We were going to like it no matter what.\u00a0 The only way we weren\u2019t going to say we liked it was if we just didn\u2019t show up.\u00a0 And this night, many Divas didn\u2019t.\u00a0 But for those of us who did, as we thought\u2026we liked it!

\nIt was unfortunate for many of the Divas.\u00a0 We had looked forward to trying out Angelo\u2019s Taverna in downtown for a few months now.\u00a0 And as life happens, work, illnesses, and other responsibilities got in the way of an enjoyable spring evening with the girls.\u00a0 Many of our regulars were last minute absentees, but our small group agreed the trek\u00a0 was worth it.
\nWe were biased from the start.\u00a0 The Italian Diva\u2019s gregarious cousin runs this new restaurant.\u00a0 We used to love our dining experiences at Rusty\u2019s in Edwardsville, his former workplace.\u00a0 Not only did we love the food, we loved his stories.\u00a0 And this night, he did not disappoint.
\nHis outgoing personality and captive storytelling is reminiscent of the Italian Diva\u2019s father, another great person you liked to just sit and listen to, who recently passed away.\u00a0 This night, he talked about a famous musician whose party he attended in Memphis during May one year.\u00a0 The way he told the story, it could have been Elvis for all I knew.\u00a0 The Greek Diva had joined him on this trip and surely she would have told us if she ran into Elvis (dead or alive).\u00a0 Whoever it was he was referring to, we were surely impressed by the adventure.
\nAngelo\u2019s is located where Max and Erma\u2019s used to be, connected to the Drury Plaza Hotel and next door to KMOX and KMOV (we did see a very svelte Steve Savard getting a to-go order).\u00a0 Initially nervous about the parking situation, we were pleased to learn that the Cardinals were out of town.\u00a0 You can pay to park in the attached garage.\u00a0 If you luck out, you can park right across the street.\u00a0 There are no meters.\u00a0 During the day, you can park one block down where Carmine\u2019s customers park because the restaurant doesn\u2019t open until 4:30.\u00a0 Otherwise, just hope for a meter.\u00a0 The furthest we had to walk was a couple blocks.\u00a0 It was a welcome walk on a gorgeous night.
\nAngelo\u2019s is in the Lombardo family of restaurants (Lombardo\u2019s Restaurant, Lombardo\u2019s Trattoria, Carmine\u2019s Steak House, and Terrazza Grill).\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever been to Lombardo\u2019s, then you probably are aware of their famous toasted ravioli.\u00a0 Being a St. Louis native in a company of transplants, I always recommend toasted ravioli to newcomers but not just any toasted ravs.\u00a0 Lombardo\u2019s.\u00a0 And Angelo\u2019s has the same texture, taste, and size as well as the savory sauce.
\nBecause we ordered between 5 and 7 p.m. , the appetizers which are normally priced $7.99 were only $4.99.\u00a0 Even though we devoured the Toasted Raviolis, the Fried Artichoke appetizer didn\u2019t last very long at our table.\u00a0 Dipped in golden butter and fried to perfection, we justified this not-so-healthy treat as a good choice because we all need our vegetables.
\nThe Picky Diva loved Angelo\u2019s House Salad except for the \u201cstinky\u201d cheese.\u00a0 Why ruin a perfectly good salad with cheese that tastes moldy and disguises itself as something fancy (Asiago)?
\nA bowl of Chili with cheese is appropriate any time of the year for one Diva.\u00a0 She was sure there was steam coming out of her ears as she enjoyed the spiciness of the soup.
\nThe Cajun Shrimp saut\u00e9ed in white wine and Cajun spices was all the Dieting Diva needed.\u00a0 The Educator Diva enjoyed half of the plentiful Smoked Turkey Club served on fresh Ciabatta bread.\u00a0 The other half would be a treat the next day.\u00a0 It was no surprise when the Italian Diva ordered the Meatball Sub, served on cheese garlic bread.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She thought it was delicious.\u00a0 She ordered it with creamy mushroom risotto.\u00a0 The Dieting Diva was jealous.
\nBy 7:30, there was a good size crowd of \u201cmature\u201d diners.\u00a0 We wondered what brought them to downtown on a Thursday night.\u00a0 As they all folded their hands to pray, we bowed our heads in shame.\u00a0 We were too famished to think about prayers when our appetizers came, and here this group was openly praying in unison before they took a bite.\u00a0 We were told they were here for a religious convention.\u00a0 We should have joined them.\u00a0 That would have been the mature thing to do.
\nIf you\u2019re heading to a Cardinal game, stop in Angelo\u2019s beforehand to take advantage of their appetizer deal.\u00a0 The toasted raviolis are way better than a hot dog at the ballpark.\u00a0 Taking the family to the Arch, why not grab lunch.\u00a0 Or just looking for a good meal and great conversations, stop in and say hello to Mike.\u00a0 You\u2019ll know who he is.\u00a0 And more than likely, he\u2019ll stop by your table.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
