Peabody Energy and Logos School selected John Guyre, a fifth-grade teacher at Russell Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District, as a Peabody\/Logos Leader in Education award recipient. For the honor, Guyre earned a $1,000 grant, as well as recognition in the St. Louis Business Journal and on KEZK radio.<\/p>\n
Guyre is pleased to have\u00a0earned the award and the grant. He has no specific plans as of yet, but says the award allows the teacher to decide how to use the money. He will use it to \u201cadd to his classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was nominated for the award by Patrick Lane, principal at Russell Elementary. The nomination included letters of recommendation and details on Guyre\u2019s influence outside of the classroom and in the community.<\/p>\n
Guyre, who is also the math teacher, organized math clubs at the school about four years ago. The after-school clubs meet in the library twice a week. Approximately 50 to 60 students are involved annually.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe clubs focus on higher-order thinking in math. We learn things such as algebra and critical-thinking word problems,\u201d said Guyre. The club members are all fifth-grade students this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cMath is my favorite of all subjects. Some kids fly with math, which is so good. The kids want to be here, they want to do math and I love the excitement of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In his 10th year with the District, Guyre spent his first four years teaching sixth-grade at the former Kirby Middle School, now known as Hazelwood East Middle School. He also sponsored math clubs at the middle school.<\/p>\n
His skills and interest in math have enabled him to assist other teachers in HSD establish math clubs at their schools.<\/p>\n
In the community, Guyre is the varsity football announcer at Hazelwood West High School. He writes articles for the Suburban Journals and said he likes to \u201cwrite about school issues and keep them upbeat.\u201d He is a former varsity softball coach at Visitation Academy, and coached baseball for American National, a select team.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was very nice of Mr. Lane to nominate me,\u201d he said. Last year, a colleague, Paula Brake, a reading specialist at Russell Elementary, was an award recipient.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis award is open to teachers all over the St. Louis area. It\u2019s very much an honor to be a part of this,\u201d said Guyre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
