{"id":5061,"date":"2011-02-23T09:14:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T15:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=5061"},"modified":"2011-02-23T09:14:11","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T15:14:11","slug":"dining-divas-enjoy-classy-ferguson-cork-wine-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=5061","title":{"rendered":"Dining Divas Enjoy Classy  Ferguson Cork Wine Bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5062 lazyload\" title=\"**Lisa Kampeter photo**\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Lisa-Kampeter-photo-99x150.jpg?resize=99%2C150\" alt=\"**Lisa Kampeter photo**\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 99px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 99\/150;\" \/>Nothing goes well with 9 degree weather and 20 mph wind gusts, except for a glass (or three) of wine, small plates of deliciousness, and girlfriends.\u00a0 This month, the Dining Divas gathered together at Cork Wine Bar in Ferguson, and when the weather warms, we\u2019ll be back.<\/p>\n<p>Having stumbled upon this \u201cnew to us\u201d establishment a few months back, my first thought of this delightful place was that it was definitely Diva worthy.\u00a0 The atmosphere alone on this warm summer night fit the menu for what we\u2019re looking for\u2026classy yet casual, different but familiar, and modern with traditional touches.<\/p>\n<p>With Emerson and Express Scripts just down the street, happy hour and after-work gatherings are the norm, but the cold weather must have kept the customers away this night.\u00a0 Even so and for some unknown reason, we were seated at the table the closest to the door.\u00a0 So our biggest concern of the evening was the outside cold that we had to endure on the inside as customers came and went.\u00a0 The biggest advantage to where we were seated was that we were also closest to the thermostat.\u00a0 So we cranked it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s rare these days that we have a server that we really like.\u00a0 Either we\u2019re getting grouchy in our older age, or they don\u2019t enjoy our company much anymore.\u00a0 This was not the case at Cork.\u00a0 It felt like we were old friends with our waiter\/bartender.\u00a0 He took the time to answer the many questions we had about the wine.\u00a0 He took the time to explain the details of the many menu items we asked about.\u00a0 He took the time to ensure the Picky Diva that she\u2019d love her dinner choice.\u00a0 And she did.<\/p>\n<p>We felt close enough to scold him for venturing outside without a coat.\u00a0 We felt close enough to ask for his phone so we could call his mother.\u00a0 The more we talked, the more he listened.\u00a0 And he had several good stories for us too.<\/p>\n<p>The No-Nonsense Diva shared an emotional story.\u00a0 As an educator, she is so proud to see her students progress and blossom.\u00a0 One very special student of hers was overcoming many obstacles and disappointments.\u00a0 Just last year, this student moved to a new foster home and a new school.\u00a0 This Diva grabbed onto this troubled child and gave him the attention and confidence he needed to improve.\u00a0 And he was.<\/p>\n<p>But then more obstacles came his way.\u00a0 He was removed from her school that he was becoming accustomed to, away from new friends he had made, and into another foster home, due to a tragic event at home.\u00a0 His world was being torn apart again.\u00a0 This is just one young man\u2019s story, but we are all sure we are surrounded by more of these situations right in our own neighborhoods.\u00a0 We can\u2019t ignore it.<\/p>\n<p>When hearing stories like these, it helps to have a drink or two around.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We had missed seeing the Traveling Diva as her adventures had sent her to the beach and to the desert.\u00a0 We were glad to have her back and delighted when she decided to try the \u201cLove\u201d martini made with Chambord, vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and a splash of Amarettto.\u00a0 Like she said, it made her happy.\u00a0 And that made us really happy.<\/p>\n<p>At Cork, the wine flights are a good option.\u00a0 You\u2019ll enjoy three samples of Chardonnays, Sweeter Whites, International Reds, or Full-bodied Reds. As an appetizer, we loved the Boiled Fingerling Potatoes soaked in butter with a garlic aioli and chopped bacon.\u00a0 At the highest recommendation of our waiter, we ordered the French Onion and Mushroom soup.\u00a0\u00a0 He was right.\u00a0 It was flavorful and delicious.\u00a0 And unlike many French onion soup recipes, the bread remained crispy.\u00a0\u00a0 Our only complaint was that the soup arrived with our meals.\u00a0 We\u2019d hoped to get it as an appetizer.<\/p>\n<p>A couple Divas shared the Shrimp Pasta and the Shrimp BLT.\u00a0 The Shrimp Pasta had these two Divas thinking they were heading into early menopause with hot flashes.\u00a0 The spicy wine sauce heated them up.\u00a0 The Shrimp BLT was prepared with grilled shrimp, romaine lettuce, garlic aioli, smoked bacon, and cherry tomatoes served open-faced on Italian bread.\u00a0 Even the Picky Diva didn\u2019t pick at it.\u00a0 She loved it.<\/p>\n<p>The Colorful Diva devoured the Vegetable Pizza covered with mushrooms, artichoke hearts, olives, fontina cheese, and roasted tomato sauce.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Finicky Diva tried the Pork Tostadas with white cheddar cheese, banana peppers, BBQ sauce and salsa.\u00a0 Many agreed.\u00a0 For someone who always has a hard time finding something she might like on the menu, she always ends up with our favorite dish.<\/p>\n<p>One item to skip &#8211; the Eggplant rolls.\u00a0 The Sophisticated Diva was disappointed in the lack of flavor, and the eggplant had a rubbery texture.\u00a0 One item to try next time \u2013 Macaroni and Cheese.\u00a0 You can\u2019t go wrong with that.<\/p>\n<p>For those of us living in North County, we were thrilled to have found another unique smoke free dining option that wasn\u2019t a chain.\u00a0 And by our standards, Cork is a dining destination know matter what the weather\u2019s like.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nothing goes well with 9 degree weather and 20 mph wind gusts, except for a glass (or three) of wine, small plates of deliciousness, and girlfriends.\u00a0 This month, the Dining Divas gathered together at Cork Wine Bar in Ferguson, and when the weather warms, we\u2019ll be back.
