The Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park and St. Louis County Parks and Recreation Department will host an Eagle Watch and Guided walk on Saturday, Jan. 22, \u00a0from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at Fort Belle Fontaine Park, 10300 Bellefontaine Road, just three miles north of Highway 270.<\/p>\n
A live eagle and several birds of prey, along with their handlers will be on site for a close-up view from the Wild Bird Sanctuary from noon-2 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n Experienced, well known \u201cbirders,\u201d Paul Bauer and Kraig Paradise will be on hand to view the majestic wild birds through telescopes and spy glasses that will be available. Hot chocolate, hot dogs and a warm fire will be located at the top of the Grand Staircase.<\/span><\/p>\n Living History Reenactors will be in 1806 costume and will share the rich history of Fort Belle Fontaine, the first U.S. fort west of the Mississippi River. The top of the bluff at the Grand Staircase offers a panoramic view of the Missouri River and overlooks the sites where Lewis & Clark camped on their Voyage of Discovery. The Grand Staircase was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n Visitors are encouraged to join in a guided hike or individually walk or bike along the three mile trail through the prairie lands, wet lands, Cold Water creek and the river front and enjoy the park in its winter glory.<\/span><\/p>\n Volunteers from the Lewis & Clark Visitor\u2019s Center will be on hand to display a replica of the Corps of Discovery pirogue, one of the smaller boats that Lewis & Clark used to transport supplies on their trip.<\/span><\/p>\n Information will also be available for anyone wanting to become a member of The Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park which holds a 501(c)3 status under the St. Louis County\u2019s Historic Sites Commission.
