The Student Council at Walker Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District led a two-week campaign to collect items to donate to the Hazelwood Community Response Team (CRT).<\/p>\n
Students collectively donated 260 items such as cleaning supplies, personal hygiene and baby products.<\/p>\n
The Hazelwood School District Community Response Team is a multi-disciplinary, geographically specific team of service providers and community members working together to serve students and families within the District. Hazelwood CRT refers families to community resources and, when possible, provides direct assistance when existing resources are not accessible.<\/p>\n
Pat Brown, instructional specialist, said the student council decided to help Hazelwood CRT because the need for supplies by the group was brought to their attention by Dr. Eric Arbetter, principal of Walker Elementary.<\/p>\n
The service project helped teach students about leadership, and several shared their thoughts.<\/p>\n
Myranda Cook, a third-grader, said \u201cThe service project helped me become a better leader because it felt good helping people in need with everything we got for the CRT.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDoing the service project with Student Council helped people in need. We helped them by giving them items like washing items and baby items and much more,\u201d said Hailey Plue, a third-grader.<\/p>\n
Brittany Wintrode, a fifth-grade student, said \u201cThis service project helped me understand that collecting stuff for people in need is sometimes fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
