The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division, in partnership with Computer Village, is starting off 2011 with two new programs to help prepare local youth for the new age technology of the 21st century.\u00a0 These courses titled, \u201cExploring Robotics\u201d and \u201cDigital Media,\u201d are open to children ages 7 or over for a one-time fee of $60 for residents and $65 for non-residents.\u00a0 They will be held on Tuesday nights at the Hazelwood Community Center, 1186 Teson Road, during the months of January and February.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn an effort to interest more kids in the areas of math, science and technology, we decided to enhance the quality of programs we offer to local youth by utilizing some of the computer equipment we have here at our main recreation center,\u201d said Darryl Miller, recreation supervisor, Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division.<\/p>\n
EXPLORING ROBOTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n This course is the first of two being taught by Computer Village instructors at the Hazelwood Community Center on Tuesday nights from Jan. 4 to Jan. 25.\u00a0 These classes will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.\u00a0 \u201cExploring Robotics\u201d will introduce youth to the worlds of engineering and space exploration while generating their enthusiasm for creating robots and useful inventions.\u00a0 During this process of learning, children will develop numerous skills such as problem solving, logical reasoning, creativity, communication, team management and self-confidence.<\/p>\n DIGITAL MEDIA<\/strong><\/p>\n This course will be held on Tuesday nights between Feb. 1 and Feb. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m.\u00a0 \u201cDigital Media\u201d offers a fun learning environment for youth that teaches them how to combine the world of computers with art and music.\u00a0 Kids will work on activity-based projects that introduce them to the basic usage of Power Point, Flash, Photoshop and Windows Movie Maker.<\/p>\n Parents interested in registering their children for these programs can contact the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Office at (314) 731-0980 or TDD 1-711.\u00a0 Since classroom size is limited, registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.\u00a0 Hazelwood residents signed up for Active Net can go online to
