{"id":4619,"date":"2010-12-17T13:54:29","date_gmt":"2010-12-17T19:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=4619"},"modified":"2010-12-17T13:54:29","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T19:54:29","slug":"hazelwood-and-ferguson-florissant-school-district-briefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=4619","title":{"rendered":"Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant School District Briefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Free Screenings For Children <\/strong><strong>Under 5 in F-F School District<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Free developmental screenings, health, hearing and vision functional screenings for children 6 months to 5 years are offered by the Ferguson-Florissant School District\u2019s Parents as Teachers program.\u00a0 A certified screener will do screenings in your home or a nearby district building.<\/p>\n<p>Developmental screenings by a trained professional can provide a snapshot of your child\u2019s strengths, identify developmental delays or behavioral concerns, and catch possible hearing, vision and dental concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Parents as Teachers is a free parent education and family support program for all families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten.\u00a0 Parents are supported by certified parent educators trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how, and why advice for parents.<\/p>\n<p>To register for a free developmental screening\u00a0 or to enroll in Parents as Teachers call 314-506-9066<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 Hazelwood Central Named to <\/strong><strong>All-Suburban Musical Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five students from Hazelwood Central High School were selected to the 2010-2011 St. Louis All-Suburban band and orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Students selected to the All-Suburban Band include Brian Jacobs, tuba; Jasmine Alade-Fa, baritone saxophone; and Kelle Sutton, clarinet.<\/p>\n<p>Students selected to the All-Suburban Orchestra are Jocelynn Wolfe, violin, and Margaret Franklin, cello.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Jackson, orchestra director at Hazelwood Central, explained the significance of being selected to the performance groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a member of the All-Suburban band or orchestra means you are one of the top players on your instrument in the St. Louis area, and it is an honor to be a part of the ensembles,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cAll of the students at Hazelwood Central are happy to have this opportunity and to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also explained the audition process for both groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe band students have to prepare all major and minor scales and then are told which scale to play in the audition, along with a few music excerpts that they are given ahead of time,\u201d said Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>The orchestra performance is set for Jan. \u00a08 at Pattonville High School. The band performance will take place on Jan. 9 at Ladue High School.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hazelwood Central Middle School band to assist Salvation Army with performances <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the spirit of the holiday season, band students from Hazelwood Central Middle School will perform for shoppers at St. Louis Mills in Hazelwood and at K-Mart in Florissant to assist with the Salvation Army Bellringer campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The band was at the Mills on Wednesday, Dec. 8, and will be \u00a0at K-Mart on Monday, Dec. \u00a020 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third consecutive year the Hazelwood Central Middle School band has performed in conjunction with the Salvation Army campaign. The students are led by band director Tom Schwartz.<\/p>\n<p>To entertain their fellow classmates, the HCMS orchestra will perform during lunch periods on Dec. 20 beginning at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Broadway Musical Revue on <\/strong><strong>Stage at Hazelwood NW Middle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A cast of more than 50 students will take the stage in song, performing a host of hits in \u201cOn Broadway!\u201d at Hazelwood Northwest Middle School Dec. \u00a016-17.<\/p>\n<p>The revue includes 10 numbers from Broadway musicals, with selections such as \u201cHard Knock Life\u201d from \u201cAnnie,\u201d \u201cI Enjoy Being a Girl\u201d from \u201cFlower Drum Song,\u201d and \u201cOmigosh You Guys!\u201d from \u201cLegally Blonde.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solos and duets will be performed from \u201cYou\u2019re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,\u201d \u201cWicked,\u201d \u201cFunny Girl,\u201d \u201cGuys and Dolls\u201d and \u201cLes Miserables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show is hosted by two eighth-grade boys in the comedic style of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>The show opens at 7:p.m. each night. Tickets are available for purchase at the door for $2 for adults and $1 for students.<\/p>\n<p>The show will also be performed for students at Lusher and Walker elementary schools and the GALACTIC program.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russell School 2nd-graders <\/strong><strong>To Perform Symphony Lessons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Second-graders from Russell Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District will display their talents from lessons learned as part of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra Adopt-a-School Program.<\/p>\n<p>The performance is Dec. \u00a016 at 2:45 p.m. in the school gym. Musicians from SLSO will participate with the children.<\/p>\n<p>Russell Elementary is one of six schools in the St. Louis metropolitan area selected to the SLSO Adopt-a-School program for 2010-2011. The program provides an in-depth and sequential approach to music education by bringing SLSO musicians and education staff into select schools in partnership with the school music curriculum. The 16-week curriculum targets second-grade students and focuses on the symphony orchestra, classical music, basic music skills and concepts. The program is taught collaboratively by the classroom music teacher and a SLSO representative.<\/p>\n<p>Musicians from the symphony will also hold demonstrations for Russell Elementary students in different grade levels in December, January and March.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. \u00a018, the fifth-grade will take part in a \u201cBlack Cat\u201d violin demonstration, and on January 21, first-grade students will be treated to a visit for \u201cPeter and the Wolf.\u201d Third-graders are scheduled for an \u201cIntroduction to the String Family\u201d on March 1.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. Cellular Funds More Than <\/strong><strong>80 Prjoects; Some to Area Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Cellular kicked off the holiday giving season by funding more than 80 projects for St. Louis area teachers through the Calling All Teachers campaign. Needs are being erased as many teachers begin to receive their projects and share them with their classrooms. In North County, 10 teachers\u2019 projects were funded (see details below).<\/p>\n<p>North County teachers and schools receiving the funds included:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A science teacher at Jana Elementary School received two camcorders to record and share projects in class.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A kindergarten teacher at McNair Elementary School received take-home activities for her class.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Hazelwood West High School<\/p>\n<p>Two projects totaling $1,612 The French teacher received a laser copier to aid in her class<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Cold Water Elementary School. Two project totaling $1,262<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A teacher in Florissant received a projector to show student presentations to the entire class.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>7 Hazelwood Dist. Students <\/strong><strong>Are MLK Oratory Finalists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seven Hazelwood School District students are among 17 finalists in the 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest sponsored by North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU).<\/p>\n<p>Five winners will be chosen from the finalists. These five winners will present their oratories at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in the Terry M.
