A Hazelwood firefighter\/paramedic<\/strong> gives some students of McNair elementary school a tour of the fire truck during last year\u2019s observance of National Fire Prevention Month.\u00a0 The Hazelwood Fire Department returned to McNair\u00a0 to teach and remind children about fire safety.\u00a0 In addition to the fire trucks, Hazelwood firefighter\/paramedics took kindergarteners through 2nd grade students on a tour of the Safety Club House while third through fifth grade students visited the House of Hazards demonstration.<\/p>\n As part of National Fire Prevention Month, the Hazelwood Fire Department has taken its fire trucks and the Safety Club House to the Hazelwood School District elementary schools of McNair and Russell, and plans to visit other private pre-schools and daycare facilities in the community over the next couple of weeks.\u00a0 The National Fire Protection Association\u2019s theme for the 2010 observance is “Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With.”<\/p>\n This year\u2019s campaign is designed to educate people about the importance of smoke alarms and encourages everyone to take the steps necessary to update and maintain their home smoke alarm protection.<\/p>\n It falls right in line with the Hazelwood Fire Department\u2019s smoke detector program<\/p>\n known as the “Detector Checkers.”<\/p>\n Over the past year, Hazelwood firefighters have been canvassing local neighborhoods and asking residents for permission to check their smoke detectors.\u00a0 The goal is to make sure every household has at least one working smoke detector.\u00a0 So far, they have installed nearly 300 new smoke detectors in homes throughout the city.\u00a0 People can now rest easy knowing they have a dependable early warning device that can alert them in the event of a fire in their home.<\/p>\n Firefighters are urging all residents to call the fire station at (314) 731-3424 and report whether or not their smoke detector is working.\u00a0 If residents need a smoke alarm or battery, one can be provided for them.\u00a0 The department is keeping track of all addresses within the city
