The Top 10 winners of the last year for Hazelwood\u2019s \u201cReading is Elementary\u201d program were recognized recently at a City Council meeting.\u00a0 These local school-age children accumulated the greatest number of minutes reading from September 2009 to July 2010.<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission in partnership with the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division, the \u201cReading is Elementary\u201d program encourages youngsters in Kindergarten through 5th<\/sup> grade to read more books in order to help improve their learning skills.\u00a0 It is held three times a year during the following seasons: fall; winter\/spring; and summer.<\/p>\n

To register, children can pick up a \u201cReading is Elementary\u201d form at either the Hazelwood Community Center or Civic Center East.\u00a0 Then they can help their parents fill it out and return it to either one of the recreation centers.\u00a0 For every 300 minutes of reading, they earn $1 credit toward the recreation program of their choice. Kids are encouraged to enter as many times as they wish.<\/p>\n

All registration forms are entered into a drawing for a splash party in the summer or a pizza party during the fall and winter\/spring seasons.\u00a0 The names of ten winners are drawn.\u00a0 Each winner is allowed to bring guests to the party.\u00a0 The splash parties are held at Hazelwood\u2019s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center.\u00a0 The pizza parties are hosted at the Hazelwood Community Center.<\/p>\n
