Applicants Sought For Miss Hazelwood, Sept. 11th<\/sup> Parade<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Going Green!” is the theme of this year\u2019s Hazelwood Harvestfest, scheduled for Saturday, Sept.\u00a0 11, from 9\u00a0 to 6.\u00a0 After the parade, a full day of fun activities for people of all ages is planned at Howdershell Park, located at 6800 Howdershell Road and next to Hazelwood\u2019s Firehouse #2.<\/p>\n

“Since BP\u2019s oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico has shown how fragile our ecosystem is for marine life, wildlife and the people who fish those waters for their livelihood, we selected \u2018Going Green!\u2019 this year as our theme as a way to encourage residents to join their neighbors and friends in saving our planet,” said Mayor Matthew Robinson of Hazelwood.\u00a0 “All of us make choices everyday that can either hurt or help the environment \u2013 in the cars we drive, the products we buy, as well as the way we use them and dispose of them.”<\/p>\n

Some of the ways Harvestfest organizers are promoting the “Going Green!” theme include having all the staff wear recycled t-shirts for the event.\u00a0 They will also be giving away recycled bracelets to the first 300 kids who enter the park, and teaching youngsters how to make craft items using recyclable items from the St. Louis Teachers\u2019 Van.\u00a0 In addition, recyclable utensils, dinnerware and cups will be used by all the vendors<\/p>\n

Shoeman Water <\/strong><\/p>\n

A new addition to this year\u2019s 22nd annual Harvestfest will be the participation of Reverend George “The Shoeman” Hutchings who is known for turning people\u2019s donated shoes into clean drinking water.\u00a0 Hutchings will be in the parade and have a booth alongside other information\/game booths at the event.<\/p>\n

The Shoeman picks up used and new shoes year round from businesses, churches, schools and shoe drives.\u00a0 Once collected, he gives them a second life by selling them to exporters.\u00a0 The money generated from these sales transactions is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water purification systems and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those in need.<\/p>\n

Parade <\/strong><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s festival will begin with the traditional Harvestfest Parade, scheduled to begin at Hazelwood City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, at 9 a.m.\u00a0 The best viewing areas for the parade can be found along Town and Country, Holiday, Imperial and Village Square Drives.<\/p>\n

Groups and organizations are invited to participate in the parade with decorated floats and automobiles, as well as marching units.<\/p>\n

Residents interested in reserving a spot in the parade for their entry can pick-up an application form at either Hazelwood Community Center or Civic Center East.\u00a0 They can also call the Parks and Recreation Office at (314) 731-0980..\u00a0 Deadline for submitting applications is Aug. 27.<\/p>\n

Music will be performed by the John Ford Highland Pipe Band and the Hazelwood West High School “Marching Wildcats.”\u00a0 After the parade ends, the John Ford Highland Pipe Band will roam around Howdershell Park and play mini-concerts for the festival attendees.<\/p>\n

Miss Hazelwood Coronation<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 10:30 a.m., the reigning 2009 Miss Hazelwood Rachel Robin will host the 2010 coronation ceremony\u00a0 for the crowning of the new Miss Hazelwood.\u00a0 To qualify as a participant of the Miss Hazelwood pageant, contestants must be young women between the ages of 15 and 19, as well as residents of Hazelwood.\u00a0 A $500 scholarship and other prizes will be awarded to the new queen.<\/p>\n

Applications and contest rules for Miss Hazelwood are available at either recreation center and on the City\u2019s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org.\u00a0 For more information, contact Jill Arnold at (314) 513-5073.<\/p>\n
