CATFISH & KITTEN<\/strong>: A kitten explores the new Missouri State Record Blue Catfish caught by Greg Bernal of Florissant, Missouri on Tuesday, July 20.\u00a0 The fish weighed 130 pounds, making It also the World Record Blue Catfish.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not every day you go out to fish on the waters of the Missouri River, and come back swimming in a media frenzy.\u00a0 Of course it could happen, if like Greg Bernal, you manage to topple a Missouri state and world record.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just what did happen to the Florissant angler, after he reeled in a 130-pound monster blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 20.<\/p>\n

\"Catfish,<\/p>\n

Bernal and his fishing companion, Janet Momphard of St. Charles, set out Monday night for a catfishing trip on the Missouri River in St. Louis County near Columbia Bottom Conservation Area.\u00a0 They were in place by around 9 p.m. that evening.<\/p>\n

For reasons obvious to most anglers, they are keeping the exact location between them and the Big Muddy.<\/p>\n

Bernal was fishing from his boat using rod, reel, and 40-pound test line.\u00a0 Cut silver carp was on the hook for bait. \u00a0With storms approaching, the two decided to call it quits by 1 a.m.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, at around 12:45 a.m., Bernal\u2018s line tightened.<\/p>\n

\"Pole<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no movement at first,\u201d reported Bernal, \u201cI didn\u2019t even know it was a fish; he was hung up on the bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fish soon worked its way out and the fight began.\u00a0 It was a difficult struggle.\u00a0 \u201cBut I had my footing on him,\u201d said Bernal.\u00a0 After 15 minutes, Bernal managed to pull the fish to the boat.\u00a0 From there it took him and Momphard a half hour to wrestle the behemoth from the water.<\/p>\n

Momphard knew right away her companion had landed a big one.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s got his almost 80-pounder on the wall, and I\u2019m like, that\u2019s much bigger,\u201d she said,<\/p>\n

Momphard knew right away her companion had landed a big one.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s got his almost 80-pounder on the wall, and I\u2019m like, that\u2019s much bigger,\u201d she said, \u201cWe lift a 125-pound generator all the time, and when we went to lift that thing up, I said this thing weighs close to the generator,\u201d Momphard added.<\/p>\n

Last Tuesday morning, the two brought the catch to the Missouri Department of Conservation\u2019s Regional Office at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles.\u00a0\u00a0 There, Fisheries Management Biologist Sarah Peper set out to weigh and measure the fish.\u00a0 The blue cat was brought to the Straatmann Feed Store in nearby New Melle, the nearest state-certified weighing scale.<\/p>\n

The final official stats on Bernal\u2019s blue cat were: weight, 130-pounds, length, 57-inches, girth, 45-inches.\u00a0 Fisheries biologists estimate its age at 20-30 years.<\/p>\n

The monster cat easily displaced the previous Missouri state record\u2014a 103-pounder landed in 1991\u2014allowing Peper to officially certify Bernal\u2019s catch as the new Missouri State Record blue catfish caught on pole and line.<\/p>\n

Not only that, the lunker also bested the 124-pound standing world record blue cat\u2014caught in May, 2005 from the Mississippi River near Alton\u2014by 6-pounds, making Bernal\u2019s fish the new World Record, pending official confirmation.<\/p>\n

Peper completed the world record application for Bernal to have notarized and submit to the International Game Fish Association, the organization responsible for declaring the fish\u2019s official status.<\/p>\n

But to Bernal, it comes down to something more visceral.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s an adrenaline rush,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cMan, you hit a big fish down there and he just stars rippin\u2019 drag off . . . it\u2019s like, oh my gosh!\u201d \u00a0As for Momphard, \u201cI told him, the bigger ones, I\u2019ll just hand the pole to you.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
