I can tell we\u2019re getting old.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s just me.\u00a0 Every May, the Dining Divas typically try out a Mexican restaurant in honor of Cinco de Mayo, regardless that we don\u2019t know why it\u2019s celebrated.\u00a0 This year, the actual feast day fell on our Dining Divas day, and I said, \u201cAbsolutamente, no!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Tacos and tostados would have to wait for June.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t care to deal with the crowds of gringos celebrating a Mexican feast day with margaritas and mariachis.<\/p>\n

Happy to have the Deep Thought Diva joining us this month, she\u2019ll be lucky if we invite her back again.\u00a0 Originally, the Dining Divas were going to try out Taqueria el Jalapeno in St. Ann.\u00a0 Mexican restaurants in this area are often compared with Cherokee Street in South City for the best and most authentic Mexican food in St. Louis, and the taqueria is one we were excited to try.<\/p>\n

The Deep Thought Diva is directionally \u2013 challenged, and when she couldn\u2019t find its location on the internet, she started a tidal wave of confusion and concern.\u00a0 Her directions showed some place on Woodson Road; the Taqueria is on St. Charles Rock Road.\u00a0 We tried to call; the number was disconnected.\u00a0 We were in a last minute frenzy so we decided to change venues.\u00a0 We chose Taqueria Los Tarascos on Woodson Road.<\/p>\n

Wear your sunglasses and sunscreen when you go into Taqueria Los Tarascos.\u00a0 Major glares shine from the bright decorations of suns and moons, colorful under-the-sea animals, sunflowers, Toucan Sam, and more.\u00a0 We got a kick out of Bandamax, the Mexican music videos playing on the tv\u2019s throughout the restaurant.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize Alicia Villareal videos, with plenty of \u201cbetween the sheets\u201d moments, were dinnertime appropriate.\u00a0 They made MTV seem G-rated.<\/p>\n

And everything was in \u201cstereo\u201d.\u00a0 Some of the TVs were on a delay.\u00a0 From our table, it was quite entertaining to hear Alicia Villareal singing \u201cAcaso Eres Tu\u201d from one side of the room, and then again from another.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know what she was saying either time, but we didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

Taqueria Los Tarascos is just down the street from another Diva favorite, Las Palmas.\u00a0 A few Divas prefer Las Palmas margaritas and quesadillas to Taqueria Los Tarascos.\u00a0 A few thought Los Tarascos was better.\u00a0 One thing is for sure.\u00a0 The menus are the same, just like Las Fuentes, El Maguey, and most other local Mexican restaurants.\u00a0 Regardless, when you go to these restaurants, do not order a regular margarita.\u00a0 You can do better at home.\u00a0 Go for a Cadillac margarita or Top Shelf margarita.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be glad you did.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re picky about our salsa, too.\u00a0 The multiple refills we requested says it all.\u00a0 And we liked the queso also, even though we confused our waitress when we asked for white cheese.<\/p>\n

We enjoyed Taqueria Los Tarascos, and for those of us living in Florissant, we were happy to find another good Mexican restaurant close to home.\u00a0 However, we all wondered about the other place.\u00a0 The original.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe it\u2019s like Henke\u2019s.\u00a0 No phone,\u201d one Diva commented.\u00a0 \u201cI saw a street view online.\u00a0 It has to exist,\u201d said another.\u00a0 We were on a mission.<\/p>\n

Prior to showing up at our new destination, I took a detour.\u00a0 Taqueria el Jalapeno did exist, but there wasn\u2019t enough time to notify everyone and change back to our original location.\u00a0 So instead of welcoming motivational and thought-provoking comments from the Deep Thought Diva, we showered her with grief and insults.\u00a0 She loved it, but we loved it more.<\/p>\n

But we still wanted to try out the other restaurant, so a couple of us did just that.\u00a0 If you are looking for truly authentic Mexican food, go to Taqueria el Jalapeno.\u00a0 We tried the pork burrito and the steak quesadilla.\u00a0 They\u2019re nothing like what you\u2019d find at Taco Bell or Casa Gallardo.\u00a0 Accept that, and you\u2019ll love them.\u00a0 Tuesdays are dollar taco days, but they\u2019re made the Mexican way \u2013 meat, onion, and cilantro.<\/p>\n

Plan to take your meal to go.\u00a0 There are only four tables and a counter.\u00a0 And don\u2019t plan to have a cocktail.\u00a0 No alcohol is sold here.\u00a0 Also, make sure you have cash.\u00a0 They don\u2019t accept debit or credit cards.<\/p>\n

But it was a delight.\u00a0\u00a0 And it was a delight to dine with the girls at Taqueria Los Tarascos too, especially on a night that wasn\u2019t filled with drunks and debauchery (well, except maybe for the music videos).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
