Voters passed a bond issue last year to allow changes in several elementary schools and middle schools. The changes are needed because of the four new middle schools currently under construction.

When the new middle schools open, for the 2007-2008 school year, sixth-graders will be at the middle schools, instead of the elementary schools. Because of this change, several elementary schools are undergoing renovations. Several are overcrowded, and the removal of the sixth grade will allow for more space for other grades, or for library resource space. The schools were prioritized using several criteria and given a priority rating of A, B or C.

Also approved were several contracts for the new middle schools for such items as painting, electric, masonry, and glass work.

Also at the meeting, the school board heard from representatives of four schools at their last school board meeting. Grannemann Elementary, Keeven Elementary, Hazelwood Middle School, and West High School presented. These presentations allow the school board to see how individual schools are performing in relation to state averages. Other schools are presenting at other board meetings.

Superintendent Chris Wright addressed the board at the meeting and said that in light of current events, she wanted to remind parents and staff of proper safety procedures. “Keeping our children safe is a top priority,” she said. She said the district had scheduled a special safety presentation for parents that would focus on all aspects of child safety. She also said the district is continually looking at safety issues and revising procedures as necessary.
.

BY CAROL ARNETT The Hazelwood School Board approved several contracts for the work being done on several schools in the district.
