The Hazelwood West High School varsity girls\u2019 soccer team<\/strong> cheered in support of teammate Mariah Gove, a sophomore, as she was named FOX 2\u2019s Athlete of the Week in April. Sports reporter Maurice Drummond presented Gove with a plaque. The team\u2019s record was 25-2 for 2009-2010.<\/p>\nThe Hazelwood West High School varsity girls\u2019 soccer team had a successful season as they advanced to Class 3, District 7 sectionals. In their last game, the Wildcats lost to Cor Jesu Academy, 0-4, closing the year at 25-2.<\/p>\n
For the team\u2019s nine seniors, the final game was bittersweet. Earlier in the evening, the seniors received their diplomas at the school\u2019s graduation ceremony at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The ceremony was adjusted to allow the girls to walk the stage first before heading to Soccer Park in Fenton for the game.<\/p>\n
Coach Jason Sellers, who teaches physical education at Garrett Elementary School, is proud of the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am very proud of the girls for the success that they had this season. My staff and I were lucky to work with such a unique group of young women for the last four years,\u201d said Sellers.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir success was reached through much hard work and determination. A 25-2 record is pretty extraordinary. The accolades that these girls received this year, from rankings in the area, state and nation to individual player awards to records set at school, were hard earned and well deserved. I am sure that we would trade every one of them in for another chance at Tuesday\u2019s game, but that\u2019s impossible. So I hope that they look back on this year with great pride and joyful memories instead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sellers said the team set school records for wins, losses, goals scored and allowed, and a winning streak. Throughout the season, the team was ranked as high as second in the area, third in the state and 31st<\/sup> in the nation.<\/p>\n\u201cIt was a great ride, and the thrills that came with it were great experiences. Everyone on the team is an exceptional student, and all nine seniors will be going to college. I am sincerely proud of that fact. They created a positive sense of community in the school and had exceptional support from administration,\u201d Sellers said.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead to 2010-2011, Sellers said the short-term goals are always the same \u2013 to get in shape, build a sense of togetherness and improve skills. \u201cOur longer term goals may vary a little. I hope that we can duplicate some of the success that this team had when we won districts and conference.
